CLEMMONS - Mrs. Mary Kelly Bailey, 86, was called home at Forsyth Medical Center on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014 after a brief hospital stay.

Mrs. Bailey was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Woodward, S.C. to the late Jessie Robert and Mary Veola Miller Kelly. The family moved to East Spencer when she was young. She received her elementary and secondary education there and graduated from Dunbar High School. Upon graduation she moved to New York, where she met and married the late Edward King Bailey, Sr.

Her accomplishments include being the first black Town Clerk for the Town of East Spencer, president of the Adult Literacy Council, bookkeeper at Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, and founder of THAS, the first after-school tutorial and enrichment program in the town of East Spencer.

She has had church affiliations with Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in New York City; Shady Grove Baptist Church in East Spencer; Emmanuel Baptist Church in Winston-Salem; and Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga.

Survivors include two daughters, Dawn Darbone and Joyce Banks, both of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister, Estelle Davis of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law, Terry Bailey and Ray Bailey, both of Winston-Salem; one sister-in-law, Carolyn White of Monticello, Fla.; and a host of relatives and friends.

Service andVisitation:Services will be at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Winston-Salem Friday, Jan. 17, 2014. The Delta Omega Omega Services will be at 10 a.m. Visitation will follow at 10:30 a.m. with funeral services at 11 a.m., with the pastor, Dr. John Mendez, officiating. Entombment will be at Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.
