Richard D. Kates

SALISBURY - Richard Dale Kates, 82, of Salisbury, passed away Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury.

Born Oct. 10, 1930, in Yancey County, he was the son of the late George Kates and Hessie McCurry Kates. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean War.

Richard retired from the Salisbury Post.

Including his parents, he was preceded in death by wife Janette Gillespie Kates on Dec. 22, 2010; sisters Mildred, Reba, Clelia, Jessie and Mary; brother Ray; and granddaughter Kimberly Renee Cook.

Survivors include his son Ricky Kates of Salisbury; daughters Donna Charlton of Mocksville and Margaret Bostian (Mike) of Salisbury; brother Frank Kates of Marion; sister Lucille Griffin of Burnsville; grandchildren Justin Kates (Cindy), Joshua Cook, Laura Charlton, Christopher Cook (Michelle), Adam Cook (Jessie), Ben Kates, Beth Coffey (Justin); and great-grandchildren Claire, Emily, EliJah, Noah, Gage and Jacob.

Memorial Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 at Liberty Hill Baptist Church, Spruce Pine, NC.
