SALISBURY - William Ashley "Bill" Ritchie, age 79, of Salisbury, passed away Monday, January 21, 2013 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem.
Mr. Ritchie was born March 15, 1933, in Fayetteville, the son of the late Fitzhugh Lee Ritchie and Ada Kerns Ritchie. He moved to Salisbury when he was 13 years old with his family, who were Salvation Army officers. Bill attended Boyden High School and began his working career at Carter Brothers and Loeblein Brothers. In 1963 he started a re-upholstery business and in 1971, Ritchie Steamway was started which he owned and operated.
Preceding him in death were a son, Warren Ray Ritchie, in 1994; and a grandson, William Nathaniel "Nathan" Peeler, in 2005.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Ruby Carpenter Ritchie, who he married Oct. 5, 1951; daughters Patricia Ann Ritchie of Salisbury and Wanda K. Peeler of Statesville; sister Maj. Gladys R. Bergin of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren Joshua Corriher Peeler (Brooke) of Lexington and William Madison "Matt" Peeler of East Carolina University; great-grandchildren Pressley Gail Peeler and Kaleb Michael Peeler.
Visitation: 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 at Summersett Funeral Home.
Memorial Service: 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29 at Summersett Memorial Chapel.
