Dr. William S. Adams SALISBURY - Dr. William Stewart Adams, age 76, of Salisbury, recognized through an endowed scholarship at Catawba College for a lifetime of service through education, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2006. From 1972 until 1984, Dr. Adams was Assistant Superintendent for Planning and Development with the Dekalb County, Va., public school system outside of Atlanta. Previously, he had served as associate professor of education at Emory University, Agnes-Scott College and Old Dominion University. Earlier in his career, he had served as principal of Rainbow Elementary School in Stone Mountain, Ga., and Windsor Park and Chantilly Elementary schools in Charlotte. Before that, Dr. Adams had been assistant principal of Charlotte 's Myers Park High School and had taught at Salisbury 's Henderson and Wiley Elementary schools. Dr. Adams received his Bachelor of Science from Clemson University, his Master 's from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and his Doctorate in Education from Duke University. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Dr. Adams volunteered for and saw action during the Korean War as a first lieutenant infantry platoon leader. He received the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star and the United Nations Service Medal. He and his wife, Martha, returned to their hometown of Salisbury in 1985, where he had been an active member of the community, including First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury, the Salisbury Kiwanis Club and the YMCA. He is survived by his wife, Martha Smith Adams, to whom he had been married for 54 years; son William S. Adams Jr. and wife Jill of Annandale , Va.; grandchildren Kathleen and Stewart Adams; and sister Rachel Adams of Baton Rouge, La. Service : A graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Rowan Memorial park. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jim C. Dunkin, senior minister, and Dr. Randal V. Kirby, associate minister, officiating. Memorials : Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.
