Della Mae Alexander

CHINA GROVE - Della Mae Alexander, 90, who devoted her life to educating children, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, March 4, 2012, holding the hand of her nephew, Thomas Hoke.

She was born in Landis June 23, 1921, to John Ulysses and Fannie Kirk Alexander. She graduated from Landis High School and Catawba College.

She enjoyed a rewarding teaching career that spanned 41 years, most as a much-loved teacher at Landis Elementary School, where she was named Teacher of the Year.

She lived her final five years actively among many friends at Trinity Oaks Retirement Home in Salisbury.

Della will forever be remembered as sweet, loving and compassionate, always doing for others. One of the youngest of 13 children, she selflessly spent many years as caregiver to one loved one after another, until she was the last of her family's generation.

She is survived by nine nieces and nine nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, each who she dearly loved.

Visitation: The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 7 from 7-9 p.m. at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in Landis.

Service: Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 8 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion United Church of Christ in China Grove, where she was a faithful member. Rev. Mark Burns will officiate, and burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Memorials: Memorials may be sent to Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 477, China Grove, NC, 28023.
