Sybil J. Martin

SALISBURY - Sybil Stone Johnston Martin, formerly of Salisbury, died on Feb. 25, 2014, at Roman Eagle Nursing Home in Danville, Va. She would have been 92 years old on Feb. 28.

The daughter of Thomas Wesley and Gola Caviness Stone, she grew up in Davidson, the next to youngest of seven children.

Mrs. Martin was married for 34 years to Lester Gray Johnston, who died in November 1973. Most of their married life was spent in Spencer, where they brought up five children. Her second marriage to Mr. Martin was from 1978 to 1981.

Mrs. Martin was a gifted musician and devout Christian. She composed more than 100 songs of praise which she enjoyed singing for church groups and friends.

Her survivors include sons David Stone Johnston and wife Vicki of Danville, Va., and Lester Gray Johnston Jr., and wife Pat of Trinidad, Col.; daughters Doris Johnston Deal of Greensboro, Lee Johnston White of Raleigh and Crystal Johnston Smith of Flat Rock.

Mrs. Martin leaves behind nine grandchildren: Laurie Alexander of Wilmington, Del., Leslie Alexander of Claymont, Del., Ann Hager of Trinidad, Col., Amy (Robert) Berry of Raton, N.M., Sam (Chad Ladeo) Johnston of San Diego, Calif., Josh (Kaija) Johnston of Leesburg, Va., Whitney (Chris) Chatley of Jamestown, Brooke (Jonathan) Csuka of Winston-Salem and Regan Deal of Chicago, Ill. Mrs. Martin had 10 great-grandchildren.

According to her wishes, graveside services for Sybil Johnston Martin will be held at Rowan Memorial Park.

Service: 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1 at Rowan Memorial Park Chapel in the Pines, 4125 Franklin Community Center Road, Salisbury, NC 28144. Services will be conducted by longtime friend Mrs. Larry Clodfelter, who met with her every Sunday for Bible study and prayer. Rev. Perry Bradshaw will assist.
