Joseph Cyril Seymour Sr.

SALISBURY - Mr. Joseph Cyril Seymour Sr., 89, of Salisbury, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at the N.C. State Veteran Home in Salisbury where he had lived for the past year.

Born Aug. 22, 1924, in Ocean Springs, Miss., to the late John Narcisse Seymour and Clara Tillman Seymour, he was a graduate of St. Martin High School in Biloxi, Miss. Mr. Seymour attended Pearl River Junior College and graduated from Perkinston Junior College and the University of Southern Mississippi.

Mr. Seymour served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 aboard the USS Darby. In Mississippi he coached football, basketball and track at Oseika High School. He worked for the Veterans Hospital in Gulfport, Miss., and transferred to the Veterans Hospital in Salisbury in the 1950s where he was Director of Recreation for many years until his retirement. He loved to play golf and won tournaments in the Salisbury area. He also loved woodworking and reading.

Mr. Seymour was a member of First United Methodist Church in China Grove.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Esther Jane Dambrino Seymour, on Nov. 24, 1989; brother Burnell Seymour; half-brothers Ulysses Seymour, Foster Seymour and Hubert Seymour; and half-sister Mary.

He is survived by his wife, Annie "Mickie" Johnson Seymour, who resides at Carrington Place in Matthews; son Dr. Joseph "Jody" C. Seymour Jr. and wife Betsy Rufty Seymour of Davidson; granddaughters Abigail Seymour of Charlotte and Amanda Seymour Chaney and husband Jason of Cornelius.

Service and Visitation: A Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday (March 8) at First United Methodist Church in China Grove; conducted by Rev. George Yates, Minister of First United Methodist Church in China Grove and Dr. Jody Seymour, Senior Minister of Davidson United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the memorial service. A private graveside service will be held later.
