Michael 'Mike' Payne

SPENCER - Michael James "Mike" Payne, 59, of Indian Trail and formerly of Spencer, went to his heavenly home Monday, March 17, 2014, at W.G. "Bill" Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born Feb. 28, 1955, in Buncombe County, he was the son of Vina Lamb Payne of Spencer and the late Leonard Payne.

Educated in Spencer schools, he attended North Rowan High School and graduated from UNC-Wilmington with a BS degree in Computer Science.

Mike was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving during the Vietnam War.

He was previously employed for Lafave Construction Company and Rowan Septic Tank Service.

Mike was a former member of Hudson-Miller-Tatum VFW Post 3006.

Those left to cherish his memory are his significant other, Deborah Carter of Indian Trail; sons Christopher Payne of Kannapolis, Mikey Payne and wife Patty of Morgantown, W.Va., Allen Payne and wife Jessica of Kannapolis; daughters Ashley Downey and Bridget Payne of Ellenboro; brother Jim Payne and wife Michelle of Tyro; sisters Claire Whitefield and husband James of Durham, Nancy Beck of Salisbury and Brenda Kerley and husband Buddy of Lexington.

He had a special bond with his grandchildren, Madysin Payne, Allie Payne, Trinity Payne, Rylee Payne, Ava Payne, Chandler Blackwelder, Justice Payne and Riley Payne.

Arrangements: The family will receive friends from 9-10 a.m. Thursday (March 20) at Summersett Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 10 a.m. Thursday at Salisbury National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by Rowan County Military Honor Guard and National Guard.

The family would like to thank the VA Medical Center for the care and support of Mr. Payne.
