COOLEEMEE - Richard Sylvester Cuthbertson Sr., 77, of Hickory Street, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Brookstone Nursing Facility, Lexington.
Born Sept. 27, 1936, in Rowan County to the late William E. Cuthbertson Sr. and Hettie Sloan Cuthbertson, he was educated in the public schools of Rowan County and was a 1956 graduate of R.A. Clement High School.
He retired as facilities manager from Camp Dorothy Walls in Black Mountain.
A devoted member of Cedar Grove AME Zion Church, he served in the following capacities: Trustee and Steward boards, Church financial secretary, Usher board, building fund committee, Lifetime Laycouncil member, Sunday School superintendent, class leader, Preacher Steward and Church Choir.
In the community, he was involved in the School Advisory Board; basketball coach for the industrial and great "Y" teams; Salisbury Rowan Community Action agency member; Faithful Guide Lodge 376 PHA, where he was past Worshipful Master and Past Worthy Patron for Omega Chapter 242 OES; Past Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 670; a member of the Spiritual Soul Seekers for 45-plus years; and was in two movies "Black Rainbow" and " Spies."
He was preceded in death by brothers William Cuthbertson Jr., Robert Cuthbertson and David Cuthbertson Sr.
He leaves to cherish precious memories his wife; Annette Ijames Cuthbertson of the home; children Cynthia (Maurice) Jefferies, Lexington, Richard (Teresa) Cuthbertson Jr., Cleveland, Sylvia (Willie) Mitchell, Salisbury, Candy (Ronnie) Clark, Manassas, Va., Jeffery Cuthbertson of the home; brother Floyd (Linda) Cuthbertson, Salisbury; sisters Addie (Billy Ray) Brown, Landis, Hettie Jean Avery, Cleveland; aunt Mary Louise Smyre of Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Arrangements: Services will be held Thursday, March 27 at Cedar Grove AME Zion Church, with visitation at 1 p.m. and the funeral at 2 p.m. Burial follows in the church cemetery. Rev. Dr. Bertha Pittman, pastor, officiating
