SPENCER - Dr. Sukumar Roy, 78, of Spencer, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2014, at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House.
Born Nov. 1, 1935, in Naotana, Barisal, India, (presently Bangladesh), he was the son of the late Kumudini and Ranjani Kanta Roy.
He was educated in Bangladesh and received his Doctorate Degree from University of Dacca in Bangladesh. Dr. Roy served his Residency in General Surgery in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Roy was a general surgeon in private practice and served in the small community hospitals in the Cleveland, Ohio, area before retiring.
Dr. Roy had a lifetime passion for Bridge as a Master in American Contract Bridge League and was a member of Charlotte Bridge Association.
Dr. Roy loved his cultural heritage; and in Cleveland, he was active in the Federation of Indian Culture Associations and the Bengali Cultural Society.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his elder brother, Phani Roy.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Chandra Roy Altemare of Salisbury; son Dave Kumar Roy of West Palm Beach, Fla.; sister Namita Choudhury of Kampur, India; brothers Ranjit Roy and wife Krishna of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Mantu Roy of Jamshedpur, India; granddaughters Hannah, Bella, Liliana, Sophia and Asha; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Service: A memorial service will be conducted 4 p.m. Sunday (April 6) at Summersett Memorial Chapel with Rev. Sayward Fletcher, Chaplain with Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care, officiating.
