SALISBURY - Mr. Harold F. Thomas, age 82, of Hollywood Drive, passed on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.
Born in Iredell County on Feb. 8, 1932, he was the son of the late Will Paul Thomas and Carrie Keaton Thomas. Educated in Iredell County schools, he graduated from Unity High School. He received a Bachelor Degree from Livingstone College and a Master Degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
He served in the United States Army in the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Thomas began his teaching career at Langston High School in Johnson City, Tenn. He also taught in the Salisbury Rowan County School System, having served as an Assistant Principal at Corriher Lipe and Principal at North Rowan Middle School.
An active and dedicated member of St. Luke Baptist Church, he was chairman of Deacon Board, chairman of Finance Committee, Treasurer, member of the Senior Choir, and former Trustee and former Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of Rowan Baptist Association.
His community affiliations consisted of membership in the Salisbury Optimist Club, YMCA, Livingstone College Alumni Association and Unity High School Alumni Association. He also served on Spencer Beautification Committee and The United Negro College Fund Committee at Livingstone College.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded to death by brothers William Thomas, James Thomas, Rev. Samuel P. Thomas, Jessie N Thomas and Andrew C. Thomas; sisters Melissa Thomas and Margaret Thomas Lyde.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Myrl Houston Thomas of the home; son Craig L. Thomas of Salisbury; daughter Julie Thomas (Darius) Grissom of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Daria Grissom of Durham and Landon Grissom of Winston-Salem; god-children Rev. Verlon and Jeryl Anderson of Fayetteville, Ann and Joe Haupe of Statesville and Theresa and Yyron Croslin of Mocksville; brother-in-law John R. Houston of Cleveland; sisters-in-law Mildred Thomas of Winston-Salem, Mary Ruth Roberson of Spencer, Clara Graham of Charlotte, Pearl Houston of Cleveland and Beatrice Houston of Greensboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Arrangements: Services will be held Friday, April 11, at St. Luke Baptist Church with the visitation at 10 a.m. and funeral at 11 a.m. Military Rites and Burial will follow services at Rowan Memorial Park. Rev. Dr. Derrick Anderson, Pastor of Grace AME Zion Church, Charlotte, is officiating and Rev. Arthur Heggins, Pastor of St. Luke Baptist Church, is Eulogist.
