John P. Miller

GOLD HILL - Mr. John Paul Miller, 85, of Gold Hill, passed away Monday, April 28, 2014, at The Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro.

He was born May 17, 1928, in Ballston Spa, N.Y., to the late Paul Miller and Anna Fayko Miller. Educated in the Ballston Spa School System, Mr. Miller completed welding school and worked for Lincoln Electric and General Electric Company in Schenectady, N.Y., in 1947.

He also completed metallurgical courses at Schenectady Community College and was a life-member of Electrical Workers Union Local 301 in Schenectady, N.Y.

Mr. Miller retired from General Electric Nuclear Atomic Motor Division with 23 years of service.

He also owned Miller Welding Business, which was established in 1950 in Ballston Spa, N.Y. Mr. Miller obtained his Pilot's License with ratings in 1955 and owned and flew many types of airplanes in the last 50-plus years, as a hobby.

An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. Mr. Miller was a volunteer for an ostomy group in Saratoga County, N.Y. He was of the Catholic faith and a member of American Legion Post 327 in Faith.

His wife of 48 years, Mrs. Mary Modesti Miller, died in May 2006.

Mr. Miller was a loving father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his son, Scott Miller and wife Jodi of Angier; daughter Anna Marra and husband Steve of Syracuse, N.Y.; grandson Steven Marra; two sisters, Pauline Arnold of Stillwater, N.Y., and Olga Voehringer of Ballston Spa, N.Y.

Visitation: The family will receive friends Thursday, May 1 from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at Powles Funeral Home in Rockwell.

Service: A graveside service will follow at 12 noon in the mausoleum at Brookhill Memorial Gardens, conducted by Rev. Doug Hefner, pastor of Salem Lutheran Church.
