Glenn Joseph Horning

SALISBURY - Glenn Joseph Horning, 84, of Salisbury, passed away Monday, June 23, 2014, at his residence.

Born March 19, 1930, in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of late Clarence Horning and Clara Lukart Horning. He resided in Kent, Ohio, until moving to Salisbury in 1998 to be closer to family.

Educated at Kent State High School, Kent, Ohio, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

His career was as a telecommunications linesman regional operator and engineering information executive for Western Reserve, Mid-Continent Telephone Company and Alltel before retiring.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Kent, Ohio, as well as Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Salisbury, where he served as an usher. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus where he served as treasurer for 16 years with St. Patrick's Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salisbury, volunteering his whole life to improving facilities and operations. One of his jobs at St. Patrick's Church was to make sure the Bell Tower always rang accordingly for services. He did many odd jobs and constantly volunteered at several organizations to help complete projects.

He served as a Boy Scout Leader, enjoyed restoring old cars, doing home projects and occasionally was seen driving his 1966 Ford Mustang. One of his favorite pastimes was going to NC State football games where his son David played.

He was a dedicated husband and supportive father. He enjoyed golf, was a member of GARS and was on several bowling leagues. He had a very kind heart and was always willing to help anyone. He will be missed by his children, grandchildren and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Grace Rabatsky Horning, on Oct. 6, 2004; and brothers John Horning and William Horning.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Michael Horning and wife Carol of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, David Horning and wife Geri of Cary, Robert Horning and wife Paula of Burlington, Dennis Horning of Salisbury; daughter Patricia Celano and husband Michael of Naples, Fla.; sister Doris Scott of Kent, Ohio; brother Jim Horning of Kent, Ohio; grandchildren Chris Horning of Akron, Ohio, Kelly Means, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Katelyn Horning of Greensboro, Olivia Horning of Salisbury, Rebekah Horning of Salisbury, Daniel Horning of Salisbury, Joseph Horning of Cary, Cole Horning of Burlington; and great-grandchildren Paul and Kyle Means of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Arrangements: A Prayer Service will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday at the Summersett Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends following the Prayer Service until 9 PM.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Friday (June 27) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. John Putnam officiating. Interment will follow at the VA National Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.
