Walter M. Hawkins

SPENCER - Mr. Walter M. Hawkins, 81, of Spencer, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014, at his home.

He was born April 10, 1933, in Spencer to the late Husie Lanning Hawkins and Hoyle Hawkins Sr. Walter graduated from Spencer High School and then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Walter retired from W.G. Bill Hefner VA Medical Center after many years of service.

He was a member of First Baptist church in Spencer for more than 50 years, and served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir.

Preceding him in death were his brothers, Hoyle Hawkins Jr., Lawrence, Bobby and Wesley Hawkins; a sister, Shirley Stewart; infant great-granddaughter Haley Marie; and daughter-in-law Angela Hawkins.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Elizabeth Hawkins, who he married June 16, 1957; four sons, Mike Hawkins and wife Kaye of China Grove, Tony Hawkins and wife Tonya of Salisbury, Joe Hawkins and fiance;e Connie Wilson of Spencer, Scott Hawkins (Laurel Mason of Greensboro) of Spencer; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Service: 12:30 p.m. Wednesday (July 9) at First Baptist Church of Spencer, with burial following at Salisbury National Cemetery with Military Honors.

Visitation: 11-12:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Spencer.
