BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Mr. Cartrell Sylvester Hawkins, 68, of Bethel Loop, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, at Brooklyn Medical Center.
Born Sept. 21, 1945, in Salisbury, N.C., to the late Wilbert Hawkins and Sadie Woods Hawkins, he was educated in the public schools of Rowan County and was a 1965 graduate of J.C. Price High School. He was last employed as a custodian at Samuel L. Tilman High School in New York.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Patricia Locklear Hawkins; brothers Lester Hawkins, James Henry Hawkins and James "Buddy" Hawkins.
He leaves precious and loving memories to his wife, Jan Sterling Hawkins of the home; daughters Bobette Hawkins (Larry), Sharisse Kiarra Hawkins (Nicholas), Jamilliah Hawkins Henry (Bobby), all of Durham, N.C.; two grandsons, Benyiah Gerrod Odom and A' Bonye' Odom of Durham; godson Justis Holman, Manhatten, N.Y.; sisters Wynolia (Irvin) Hunt, Washington, D.C., Sadie (Bishop Harvey) Rice, Dianne Sturdivant, Carolyn (Paul) Blackwell, Wanda (Tyrest) Gaither, all of Salisbury, Renee (Donald) McClain, Hickory, N.C.; brothers Willie Ray (Wynola) Hawkins and Randy Charles Hawkins, both of Salisbury; sister-in-law Vickie Hawkins, Brooklyn, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The family will be at the home of his sister, Carolyn Blackwell, at 325 Will Black Road, Salisbury, the remainder of the time.
Arrangements: Services will be Saturday, Aug. 16 at Progressive Outreach Ministry, 600 N. Long St., Salisbury. Visitation is 11 a.m. and Funeral at 12 Noon with Pastor Nasby Mills officiating and Bishop Harvey Rice, Eulogist. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery.
