Ralph Osteen

HICKORY - Ralph Osteen, 86, of Hickory, passed away Nov. 18, 2009, at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 26, 1923, in Henderson County, he was the son of the late R. Clingman and Irene Redden Osteen.

Mr. Osteen graduated from Hendersonville High School Class of 1940-41. During World War II, he worked as a shipbuilder in New Port News, Va., and worked for American Emka with 32 years of service. He then moved to New Smyrna Beach, Fla., in 1977, where he lived for years and attended First Baptist Church of New Smyrna.

He was a member of the Golf and Country Club, Anglers Yacht Club, Shrine Club, Lions Club and the Bahia Temple in Orlando, Fla.

Moving back to Hendersonville, he was a member of Mud Creek Baptist Church and for many years was an active Deacon, Sunday School teacher, R.A. leader and the church clerk.

He later moved to Hickory in 2005 to be near his children and attended Lakeview Baptist Church. Mr. Osteen was also a member of Sons of the American Legion, a volunteer fireman at Valley Hill Fire Dept., and member of Kedron Lodge 387 in Hendersonville.

Mr. Osteen is survived by his wife of 69 years, Laura Hamilton Osteen of the home; a daughter, Brenda O. Hamilton and husband William of Hickory; two sons, R. Stanley Osteen and wife Barbara Cline Osteen of Salisbury; Scott E. Osteen and wife Patricia Hill Osteen of Hickory; a brother, Bill Osteen and wife Betty of Weaverville; a sister-in-law, Margie Hamilton of Hendersonville; eight grandchildren, Kim H. Genaway, Kelly Hamilton and husband Howard, Kristie H. Klingenberg and husband Kirt, Karla Hamilton, Jill Love and husband Steve, Josh Osteen, Kyle Osteen and Corey Osteen; 14 great-grandchildren, Heather, Tyler and Kasey Genaway, Kendyle, Kaidyn and Logan Hamilton, Konner, Kollin, Karsten and Karter Klingenberg, Brett Huffman, Austin and Kelcie Love and Luke Osteen; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services: The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 at Lakeview Baptist Church with the Rev. Ben Rowe officiating. The graveside service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Shephard Memorial Park, Hendersonville.

Pallbearers will be Josh Osteen, Kyle Osteen, Cory Osteen, Tyler Genaway, Kasey Genaway and Brett Hufffman.

Visitation: The family will receive friends Friday from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shiners Children's Hospital, 12502 N. Pine Drive, Tampa FL, 33612; Lakeview Baptist Church, 4080 N. Center St., Hickory, NC 28601.
