CHINA GROVE - Paul Stanley Smith, 81, passed away Saturday morning, Sept. 3, 2011, at Big Elm Nursing Center, following a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 19, 1929, on the family farm near Enochville, he was a son of the late Mack Henry and Mardre Horne Smith. Mr. Smith had honorably served our country with the U.S. Navy.
He was a professor of English, grammar and literature, having taught at Gaston College and Appalachian State University. Being well known as a poet, Mr. Smith was a prolific writer and lover of poems. He had eulogized his parents in his poetry and had honored his first cousin, Ernest L. Outen, a Marine who died in the battle of Okinawa.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Stanley Bryan Smith, who was killed in 1998 in a motorcycle accident.
Surviving family members include his daughter, Elizabeth Lee Johnson; a grandson, Christopher Matthew "Matt" Smith; his great-grandson, Stanley Smith, II, all of Rock Hill, S.C.; five brothers; and three sisters.
Visitation and Service: The family will receive friends Sunday evening, Sept. 4 from 6-8 at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in Landis. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, in the funeral home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Benny Burgess, pastor, Liberty Baptist Church in Enochville. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Park with military graveside rites.
