SALISBURY - Irene Morgan McNew, 86, of Salisbury, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at Rowan Regional Medical Center with her family by her side.
Born Aug. 2, 1925, in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late Vera Wylie Morgan Peeler and Charles Morgan.
A registered nurse, she was employed by Rowan Regional Medical Center and was the first head nurse in ICU. She also wrote the original manual for ICU, while under the name of Rowan Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the first graduating class from Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.
A life-long resident of Salisbury, Mrs. McNew was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
Preceding her in death was her brother, Charles Thomas "C.T." Morgan.
Survivors include her husband, Frank H. McNew, whom she married Jan. 31, 1948; daughter Cheryl McNew Williamson; and granddaughter Amber Renee Williamson, both of Salisbury.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 at Lyerly Funeral Home.
Service: 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 211 N. Church St., Salisbury. The Rev. Whayne M. Hougland, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
