Phyllis Patterson Childers

KANNAPOLIS - Phyllis Patterson Childers, 98, of Kannapolis, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012. Her death follows a period of declining health.

Mrs. Childers was born on Nov. 7, 1913, in Alexander County, a daughter of the late William A. and Lola Gwaltney Patterson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Marvin L. Childers, who died Dec. 30, 1989; special friend of 11 years Jessie Cook; and three brothers, Donald Patterson, W.A. Patterson Jr., Eugene Patterson; and three sisters, Minky Wiles, Maxine Hager and Winnie Brawley.

She moved to the Kannapolis area in 1930 and retired from Cannon Mills after 39 years where she had been employed in the wash cloth department, Plant 1.

During World War II, Mrs. Childers moved to Baltimore, Md., for several years and worked in an airplane factory to support the military. Mrs. Childers was also an active member of Royal Oaks Baptist Church for 60 years, where she led children's Sunday School for nearly 40 years.

Survivors include her son, Charles Kenneth Childers and special friend Jewel Martini of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Maria Heasley and husband Tam of Charlotte and Charles Kenneth Childers, Jr. and wife Lisa of Clover, S.C.; two great-grandchildren, Savannah Heasley and Audrey Heasley, both of Charlotte; three brothers, Dwight Patterson, Buddy Patterson and Dillon Patterson, all of Hiddenite; and one sister, Shirley Bunton of Statesville.

Service and visitation: A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at Royal Oaks Baptist Church, Kannapolis, officiated by Rev. Leon Smith. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m.. Saturday at the church prior to the service.

Kenneth,
Aunt Phyllis was a special lady. She has always been my role model.I have enjoyed our talks,advice,and her positive out look on life. My favorite....It's no fun being old, but I sure had a good time getting there.We are out of town(state) and will not be able to attend.
