William 'Bill' Grady Cline Jr.

SALISBURY - William "Bill" Grady Cline Jr., 89, of Salisbury, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at his residence.

He was born April 16, 1923, in Winchester, Va., a son of the late William Grady Cline Sr. and Sally Wagoner Cline. He moved to Salisbury at the age of about one year old and grew up here. He attended city schools and graduated from Boyden High School with the Class of 1940.

Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II with the Pacific Fleet.

On July 30, 1951, he married the love of his life. Doris Elizabeth Peacock, who he was married to for 61 years.

He worked at NC Finishing Company for 45 years and was active in the Local 440 UTWA, serving on various committees and as vice president. He also served as an election official in Salisbury East Ward 38 for many years. He was an avid blue tickhound breeder and coon hunter.

Bill was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, where he served on the council, property committee and as church custodian for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Tommy Cline (1965) and Benny Cline (May 2012); two sisters, infant Laura Cline and Dot C. Myers (2008); and stepmother Cordell Jordan Cline.

Left to cherish his memories are wife Doris Cline of Salisbury; son Gary David Cline and wife Cindy of Faith; daughters Tamara C. Grubb and husband Mitch and Lisa C. Monroe and husband Brent, all of Salisbury; brother Ted Cline (Carolyn) of Salisbury; sisters Evelyn C. Johnson of Charlotte, Mary K. Cress of Granite Quarry, Joyce C. Poteat (Judd) and Frances C. Campbell, both of Salisbury, and Ann C. Crowell (Mike) of Concord; grandchildren Sabrina C. Basinger and husband David, David A. Cline and wife Holly and Chloe Monroe; great-grandsons Lawson Basinger and Cooper Cline.

Visitation: 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 701 E. LaFayette St., Salisbury, NC 28144.

Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27 at Messiah Lutheran Church conducted by the Rev. Don Safrit. Burial to follow at Rowan Memorial Park, with military honors conducted by The Lyerly Volunteer Honor Guard.
