James 'Jim' Hemby

ROCKWELL - James "Jim" Edward Hemby, 88, of Rockwell, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at his residence.

Jim was born March 13, 1924, in Neelyville, Mo., to the late Guy Edward Hemby and Daisy Becker Hemby.

Jim was a 1943 graduate of Neelyville High School and was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the US Navy during World War II. Jim had retired from Mallinckrodt Chemical Company.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Veleta Fern Blagg Hemby, who he married in 1945; son Donald Edward Hemby and wife Elizabeth of St. Paul, Mo.; daughter Judith "Judy" Boyd of Salisbury; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister Dortha Hastings of Iowa.

Visitation: 12-1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 at Powles Funeral Home

Memorial Service: 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 at Powles Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Harold Jordan, chaplain, Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care, Salisbury.

Graveside Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 at the US National Cemetery, Salisbury, with Military Rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care, 720 Grove St., Salisbury, NC 28146.
