Hugh 'H.T.' Smith Sr.

SALISBURY - Hugh Talmage (H.T.) Smith Sr., age 90, of Salisbury, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at his home.

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Saluda County, S.C., the son of the late Pearl Jenkins Smith and Paul Smith.

H.T. graduated from Ashewood Central High School and was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army, where he received a purple heart. He worked for Bell Telephone for 42 years and retired in 1983.

He was a charter member of Grace United Methodist Church, a member of Fulton Lodge 99, Shriners and Andrew Jackson American Legion Post and Rockwell Lodge 657.

Preceding him in death were sisters Betty Brewington and Virginia S. Poe; brothers James and Bill Smith; and great-grandson Grayson Leonard.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Edith (Catherine) Hardister Smith, who he married Aug. 28, 1948; son Hugh Talmage Smith Jr. (Lori) of Salisbury; daughters Cathey S. Little of Faith and Deborah S. Leonard (Perry) of Salisbury; brother Tommy Smith of Rock Hill, S.C.; sisters Dot Babb (Roy) and Bootie Gilliam of South Carolina; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 12-1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 Summersett Funeral Home.

Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Summersett Memorial Chapel conducted by Rev. Paul Burke. Burial will follow at Salisbury National Cemetery with Military and Masonic Rites.
