Paige Denson Hess

FAITH - Paige Denson Hess, 91, of Faith, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at the Liberty Lane Hospice Unit in the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury. Paige was born on April 3, 1922, in Rockwell, a son of the late Martin Luther and Addie Shive Hess.

Paige is a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army 455th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion. He was in the second wave that landed on Normandy and fought in the Battle of Rhineland. He received an EAMET Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars. At one point during the war, Paige and his two brothers, Carl and Junie, were all fighting in Europe at the same time. Paige faithfully attended the annual "Rabb" Army Reunion in Nashville, Tenn., and was in attendance for the final reunion in June 2012. After World War II, he served in the Merchant Marines and worked in the shipyards in Baltimore.

Paige attended Granite Quarry High School and Rowan Technical College. He worked for Miller Equipment and Power Curbers before going to work for Proctor & Schwartz in Lexington, where he worked for over 20 years before retiring as a Master Welder. Paige also taught welding classes at Rowan Tech.

Paige was a lifelong member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he was a past council member and a member of the Barger Sunday School Class. He was one of the last Charter Members of the Faith American Legion Post 327 and was also a past member of the Faith Civitans.

Paige was a good man, loving husband, devoted father and adoring grandfather and great grandfather. His family was always second in his life, only to be behind his God and Church.

In addition to his parents, Paige was preceded in death by his brothers, Jay Hess, Carl Hess and M.L. "Junie" Hess Jr.; and sister Drama H. Shuping.

Paige is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Mary Ida Mull Hess, who he married Feb. 24, 1948; daughter Vicki H. Staton and husband Steve of Rockwell; grandsons Matt Staton and wife Adrian of Rockwell, and Will Staton and wife Charlotte of Charlotte; great-granddaughter Kenzie Tate Staton; and his beloved little dog, Missy.

Service: The Funeral Service will be held Friday, May 3 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, conducted by Rev. Randy Conley, Pastor. The burial will follow in the Faith Lutheran Church Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the National Guard and Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation: The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church Family Life Center.
