SANFORD - Sylvia Almedia Medinger Spivey, 72, of Sanford, went to be with the Lord on Friday June 28, 2013 at her residence.
She was born Feb. 17, 1941 in Salisbury, the daughter of the late Corinna Anne Walton Kearns and Paul Schwartz Medinger.
Sylvia was a graduate from the North Carolina School for the Deaf in Morganton. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years in Charlotte as a ramp clerk. She was the first female hired for her position and the first deaf person hired as a ramp clerk. She was a lifelong member of Oakdale Baptist Church. Sylvia's hobbies were traveling and gardening.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by step-brother, Billy Kearns.
Left to cherish her memories are husband Ronnie Gilbert Spivey of Sanford, whom she married on June 27, 1959 in Dillion, S.C.; son, Ricky Earl Spivey; daughters, Kathleen Ann Spivey-Darnell (Steve Darnell) and Paula Smith (Peter Brian); brothers, Neal (Judy) Medinger, Retired Col. Grey (Candy) Medinger - USMC and Barry (Lorna) Medinger; sister-in-law, Emma Kearns; step-sisters, Annie Starnes and Nancy Starnes; grandchildren, Nicole Carter Trembley (Bobby), Natalie Freeman, Brittany Adams, Austin Adams, Chelsea Stowe, Regan Veach (Coty), Orie Hamilton and Zackery Hamilton; great-grandchildren, Riley and Julian Trembley and Haley Cannon.
Visitation and Services: The body will lie in State from 10:30-11 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2013 at Oakdale Baptist Church, 200 Charles Street, Spencer, NC 28159.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 1, 2013 at Oakdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Gross and Rev. Tom Lineberger officiating.
Burial will follow in Oakdale Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Fellowship Building.
