Carl Canup Obituary

Carl Ray Canup

SALISBURY - Carl Ray Canup, 95, went to his eternal rest on Sept. 17, 2013, after an extended illness.

Born on Jan. 29, 1918, he was the fourth of five children, born to Ida Belle Julian Canup and David Lee Canup. He was educated in Rowan County public schools and graduated from Granite Quarry High School. He attended Pfeiffer College as well as N.C. State College. He farmed his entire life, finally retiring from farming at age 82. He loved the land and worked hard to be a good steward of God's creation.

Carl was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he served faithfully in many capacities including Superintendent of Sunday School, member of the Church Council and was an Honorary Life Member of Lutheran Men. He was also a volunteer for South Salisbury Fire Department.

Carl was devoted to his family and was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Dunn Canup; his oldest son, David Lee Canup II; as well as his brothers and sister, Arnold Canup, Harley Canup, Ruth Bernhardt and Luther Paul Canup.

He is survived by three children, Wilbur Canup of Salisbury, Nancy Canup Kiltie and husband Mike of Atlanta, Ga., and Jim Canup and wife Caren of Florence, S.C.; and his daughter-in-law, Alice Lineberry Canup of Wilmington. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Eric Canup and wife Kelly of Wilmington, Jason Canup and wife Lauren of Wilmington, Melissa Kiltie Horgan and husband Jason of Atlanta, Ga., Anna Kiltie Maddox and husband Adam of Atlanta, Ga., Ashley Canup Love and husband Ed of Florence, S.C., and Josh Canup and wife Kimberly of Florence, S.C.; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, on Friday, Sept. 20 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Nancy, I just learned of your fathers death. My heartfelt sympathies to you and your entire family. As a very young man both he and your mother
served both as a friend and a spiritual teacher to me. I have never forgot either and have nothing but fond memories of both. He will be remembered by so very many people with whom he came into contact, both young and old. May the empty feeling in your hearts be
soon filled with many years of wonderful memories and the knowledge that God will say to him "an earthly job well done"

I was not fortunate enough to know Mr. Canup, but he had to be a very special man to be the father of such a fine son as Jim! To Jim and Caren, Ashley and Ed and the boys, I send my love and rejoice with you in the blessings that you have enjoyed during his long life.
