Gary G. Sherrill

Mr. Gary Gluyas Sherrill, 81, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2016, at his residence surrounded by family. Mr. Sherrill was born Sept. 21, 1934 in Kannapolis. He was a son of the late Henry Bruner Sherrill and Lottie Beatrice Upright Sherrill. Gary graduated from A.L. Brown High School in 1953. He played football for the A.L. Brown Wonders and was ranked one of the best lineman in the state in 1952 when he lead the team to 10 straight victories. He was selected as an All-State Player in 1953 and represented A.L. Brown in the Shrine Bowl that same year. His love for the game and the joy of competition caused him to excel in sports through his years as an educator. He enjoyed playing sports on the playground and often running with his students. Gary received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Catawba College in 1958 and his Masters in Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He began his career in 1957 for the Rowan County Schools as a teacher. He retired in 1992 from Bostian Elementary School, where he was the principal. Gary also served in the United States Army and United States Army Reserves. He was a member of Jackson Park United Methodist Church since 1959, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and was a member of the church choir. He was also a member of the local Masonic Lodge. Gary had a love for antique cars, which he restored, and enjoyed driving them around town and to school. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a twin brother, Larry Bluyas Sherrill. Mr. Sherrill is survived by his wife, Margaret Anne Funderburk Sherrill; son, Len Harris Sherrill; daughter, Beth Anne Sherrill Upchurch and husband Eric Arlie Upchurch, all of Kannapolis; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Ashlee Upchurch and Christopher Arlie Upchurch and wife Amanda Furr Upchurch; two great-grandchildren, Emma Grace Upchurch and Zachary Sam Larabee; and brother, Norris Thamar Sherrill. Service: A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016, at Lady's Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Chuck Halipilias will officiate. Visitation: The family will receive friends from 10-10:45 a.m. Saturday at Lady's Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jackson Park United Methodist Church Youth Program, or the Jackson Park United Methodist Church Youth Choir, 715 Mable Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28083.
