Professor Riggs was the very best professor I had while attending McGill University. His approach to teaching continues to influence my teaching.

Professor Riggs was one of the few professors at McGill who left an indelible mark on me. To this day I still think of him and the classes I took. I still have all his assigned books in my library. I cherish the long conversations I had with him after lectures, if there were more like him the world would be a better place. My condolences to his entire family.

Very sorry to read of Prof Riggs’ passing. He taught me “Emerging Modern America” when I was an undergrad at McGill in the mid-70’s. He was both an engaging and challenging lecturer. I will always remember our main essay assignment—write about any given year between 1876 and 1945 based on primary sources only. It taught important research skills and the importance of good narrative writing. These are lessons I continue to use to this day. My belated condolences to the family

Al was a dedicated McGill Professor who co-chaired the North American Studies program with my husband Tom Velk. He often visited our Chateau apartment in downtown Montreal. He was intelligent, articulate, friendly and he stood up for me when my marriage went sideways. I remember happy times at the cottage in Chazy with Al and Barbara. Wish he was still with us. Thanks Barbara for all your kindness. Rest In Peace, Al.

Dear Barbara,
I extend my sympathies to you and your family. Alvin Riggs ranks as one of the most outstanding professors I ever had the chance to meet. He was a truly great educator. I had the good fortune to take several of his classes at McGill and he has, to this day, shaped my teaching and advising of students. I am sure I share many former McGill students' sentiments in saying "We are all so much better and wiser for having learned from Professor Riggs."

I am an historian at McGill. I know your husband through his works and legacies here as a professor. It is sad to lose such a wonderful mind and humane teacher.

Dear Barbara,
I am very sorry to hear of Al`s death. As contemporaries at McGill [I arrived a year or two after Al] I have many memories of our time together. Please accept my condolences and best wishes during this very difficult time, to you, Amy, Rose and family.
