He Taught Me to be a Leader

Coach Deal was the first man who made an impact on my life. His tenacity and energy on the sidelines during a game always made me better. Under his leadership I came to grasp how one man could influence another's life (game) to a whole new level when we lead with passion. There was no one I love pleasing more than Coach Deal. And...there's no one I wanted to displease less than him. His leadership in my life was prophetic because I saw in him what I could be as I coached many people myself since 1977--mine is just a different arena of coaching, but many of the same principles apply. I'm forever grateful and indebted to the man, the leader, the Coach...Larry Deal.

Reading these treasured comments of memories of Coach Deal brings back wonderful memories of my father's effect on his students and those he encountered throughout his teaching career. Coach Deal had the same affect and impact on everyone he taught, coached and mentored. May his children and grandchildren know how deeply respected he was.

Very sad to hear about Coach Deal's passing. I graduated from South Rowan in 1984 and played football three years. Coach Deal was a passionate coach who gave his all to each of his players. Just one of those special coaches who was able to get the most out of his players. He was quick to get on you when you were going through the motions, but he was also your biggest cheerleader when you succeeded.

I was fortunate to have played for Coach Deal's first season as South's head football coach. The pre-season predictions was not good for that 1983 team, but he got us believing in the off season. We went on to have a successful season as conference co-champions and then went on to win the Div II Western NC Championship. We had an 11-2 record, which I believe is still the most wins in school history. He was the drive behind that team that was picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the conference. I loved his passion and enthusiasm for the game. He was just genuine coach, you always knew exactly where you stood with the man.

High School football was one of the greatest experiences of my life. A big reason for that was because of Coach Deal and all the other fine football coaches at South. I think you notice that I still refer to him as Coach and that's out of respect for the man and because that's who he will always be to me. I loved Coach Deal and I would have done anything in the world for that man. I think that last sentence just defined what a great leader is.

My condolences to Coach Deal's family. I know a lot of people are hurting now that they heard the news. He's had such a positive impact on so many people's lives. What a great legacy he leaves behind. Rest in peace Coach, you earned it.
