Ungaro, Joan - Salt Lake City
1927 ~ 2016 Beloved sister, aunt, great-aunt, cousin and friend, Joan Ungaro died peacefully at Brookdale Salt Lake City on June 8, aged 89. Joan was born May 11, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to Dorothy Tyrrell Ungaro and Gerard (Gerry) Magella Ungaro and spent much of her life in Winnetka, Illinois before moving to Santa Fe, NM and Salt Lake City, UT. Joan was born with Cerebral Palsy and cognitive limitations, but despite her disabilities, she lived a full and contented life. Joan was always an active member of the extended family, and will be fondly remembered for her funny, infectious laughter and her excitement during the holidays (she delighted in wearing bunny ears on Easter). Joan was dedicated to making handicrafts, and family members treasure her handmade hooked rugs, placemats, and tilework. Joan also had a steadfast perseverance that she applied to her exercise, endlessly kicking her way across the width of the pool in the shallow end or cheerfully riding her stationary bicycle ("all the way to New York," she would say). Joan was devoted to and cared for her dogs (Licorice, Tina, and numerous Boston Terriers named Blackie). She also had an enormous reservoir of patience, and would often sit and read books for hours, complete word puzzles, or work on math problems. In later life, as she moved into assisted living facilities, she loved to linger by the front door and nurse's stations to watch life unfold there. With Joan in our lives, we all had inclusion, acceptance, understanding, and patience as part of our daily lives. She will be dearly missed by family, friends and caregivers. Joan is survived by her sister Patricia Dodson, her nieces Daryl Wilson (Wally), Karen Dodson, Dorothy (Dee) McLaughlin (Tom), Lindsey Dodson, Leslie Dodson, her grandnieces and grandnephews Connery Wilson Obeng, Reuben Wilson, Ryan McLaughlin, and Ainsley-Marie McLaughlin, and her great grandniece Amelle Obeng along with many close cousins. She is preceded in death by her mother and father. Special thanks to her long-term companion, Alexis Abraham, and to Dr. Beth Hanlon and the staff at Brookdale Salt Lake City for their attentive and loving care. In lieu of flowers, the family invites friends and family to make donations that assist people with disabilities. Final services will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside, IL at a later date. Condolences may be sent to the family care of Ungaro/Dodson, P.O. Box 520511, Salt Lake City, UT 84152 or by email to rememberingjoan1927@gmail.com. The family welcomes memories, stories and photos of Joan's remarkable life.
