Corky Nichols

1930 ~ 2013
Price, Utah-Mel "Corky" Nichols, age 83, passed away September 2, 2013 in Price.
He was born June 29, 1930 in Helper, Utah to Harry R. and Virginia Johnson Nichols. On June 25, 1949, he married Beulah Faye Wilcoxson in Spring Glen; she preceded him in death on July 20, 1990.
Corky grew up in Spring Canyon coal camp, Castle Gate, and Spring Glen. He spent his life in Carbon County and never wanted to live anywhere but Price. In his youth he enjoyed amateur boxing and held the Utah AAU State Champion Amateur title. He was a graduate of Carbon High School Class of 1948 and enjoyed coaching baseball and softball.
Corky's all time high was riding around in his bright shinny red dune buggy and playing polka music so loud that the entire county could hear it. He worked for two years in the Castle Gate Coal Mine and drove the Wonder Bread truck for 20-years. Somewhere in the middle of it all he became a businessman for over 30-years. The Century Café and Cork's Club was what he liked best. He also enjoyed managing the Price Elks Lodge #1550 for a couple of years along with being a life-time member. He helped establish the Price Downtown Association, was President for 9-years and continued his membership in the association. He held the secretary/treasure position for the Price Bar Association. One of his greatest accomplishments that makes one smile is the St. Patrick's Day Parade he founded in 1984. Corky was always finding ways to revitalize main street and 1991 he was honored as the parade's Grand Marshall.
Corky's family, Beulah Faye Wilcoxson (deceased); three children: Sherrie Gordon, Larry Allan Nichols (deceased) and Vickie Passarella; 4 grandchildren, Johni Lyn (Corey Burnside), CW (Melinda) Gordon, Jeff Passarella (Dusty) and Jennifer Passarella; 9 great-grandchildren, Lyndsie, Breanna, Taylor, T'Ann, Kelton, Trenity, Cienna, McKinlee, Berkley and Hayden; and 1 great-great grandchild, Byntlie; 4 brothers and 1 sister, Robert (Betty), William (Sandy), Fred (Geraldine), Connie Cutler (Paul) and Gary.
