Donna Jean Barnow Balandrin, 60, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2013 in Salt Lake City, UT from complications related to metastatic breast cancer, a disease she fought courageously for 12 years. She was born on November 3, 1952 in Chicago, IL to the late Chester K. Barnow, J.D. and Rosalind D. Barnow (nee Balkin). Donna graduated from Niles West High School (Skokie, IL) in 1970, Indiana University, Bloomington (B.A. in Spanish; Phi Beta Kappa) in 1973, and Northwestern University (Master of Arts in Teaching, M.A.T.) in 1975. She married Manuel F. Balandrin on March 20, 1977 in Chicago, IL, and moved to Salt Lake City in 1982, where their son, David, was born in 1984.
Donna had a gift for always making others feel welcome, and she was able to forge lasting friendships with people from many different backgrounds. She loved playing and listening to music, ballet, Earl Grey tea and English scones, Teddy bears, knitting, spinning yarn, jewelry- and costume-making, book club, painting, gardening, and her two little dogs and two little birds.
Donna is survived by her husband, Manuel, her beloved son, David, her mother, Rosalind, her sisters, Alice Weinger and Susan Cohn, and one granddaughter, Sophie Jo. Her vibrant eyes and beautiful smile will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. and Services at 2 p.m. at Evans and Early Mortuary, 574 East 100 South in Salt Lake City on Friday, May 17, 2013. Interment will follow the service at the B'nai Israel Cemetery, 4th Avenue and Q Street in Salt Lake City.
