1925 ~ 2013
Edwin Carlyle Hinckley passed away January 18, 2013. He was born in Provo on March 11, 1925, the older son of Edwin Carlyle and Emma Jacobs Hinckley.
When Ed was eleven, his family moved to Pittsburgh, California where his father worked for US Steel. In 1943, Ed graduated from Pittsburgh High School and immediately joined the United States Marine Corps
. During World War II
, he served in the South Pacific and Occupied Japan. After his discharge in 1946, Ed enrolled at Brigham Young University. He met Beula Bell the first week he was on campus and they were married September 3, 1947 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
After Beula graduated from BYU, Ed and Beula moved to Oregon where Ed graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University in 1949. Later, he earned his Masters of Education degree from Oregon State. Ed taught high school in Eugene, Oregon for several years before moving his family, including three children; Ann, Scott, and Craig, to Menomonie, Wisconsin where he taught Industrial Education at the University of Wisconsin; Stout. After receiving his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Northern Colorado, Ed came to BYU where he was professor of Industrial Education until his retirement in 1988. While at BYU, he served as department chair for several years and was honored several times for the quality of his teaching and related activities. Ed and Beula loved adventure. They spent two years in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where Ed taught at Haile Selassie I University. After that experience, they traveled widely and often on every continent except Antarctica. They traveled to watch birds, research family history, and satisfy their curiosity. Ed's favorite food was ice cream and he searched until he found some in every place they visited. He was a master craftsman who loved working with wood, particularly cherry. He also was delighted to use his talents to enrich the lives of family, friends, and Cub Scouts. He was a committed member of the LDS church and enjoyed the service he provided there, as well as the blessings he received from his membership in the church. We are all lucky to have had his unconditional love and positive example in our lives.
Ed is survived by Beula, his wife of 65 years; three children, Ann (Patrick) Costello, Boise, Idaho, E. Scott (Mikelene), and Craig A.
