Gertie Van Leeuwen Barney James Chadwick, one of Utah's "Gabor" sisters, died March 2, 2013. Born August 19, 1918 to John and Sarah Debry Van Leeuwen in Salt Lake City. Graduate of LDS Business College. She was the oldest of six children. Held various secretarial jobs throughout her life, including with the Utah National Guard.
During her life, Gertie served in several callings for the LDS Church in the Young Women's and Relief Society. She lived her final years of her life among friends at Cottonwood Creek Assisted Living. Her family thanks its staff, as well as the staff of Inspiration Hospice.
Married in the Salt Lake Temple to Glen Gardiner Barney. Later married Dale James and Faye Chadwick. All three preceded her in death. Also preceded in death by her brother John J. Van Leeuwen, sister Violet McGrath and son John Henry Barney.
Survived by her son Glen Stephen (Alice) Barney, daughter Colleen Barney, daughter-in-law Karen Barney, 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, brothers Ray (Joanne) and Ken (Claudia), sister Josie (Frank) Herridge.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, March 8, 2013 at the Cottonwood Creek Ward, 1250 East Murray Holladay Road (4800 South). A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6-8 pm at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple and one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday. Interment Salt Lake City Cemetery.
