Robert (Bob) Wayne Gilbert, age 88, died on July 31, 2013 in Layton, Utah. He was born August 24, 1924, to Wayne C. and Alice Myrick Gilbert in Cumberland, WI. He graduated from Cumberland High School as Class Salutatorian and Class President. He later attended the University of Washington
, Citadel Military College, and University of Georgia
, where he met his future wife. During WWII he saw extensive combat in France (Normandy), Luxembourg, Belgium (Battle of the Bulge), and Germany. Decorations include the Combat Medic Badge and a Bronze Star
for heroism. He spent the last month of the war as a POW in a German hospital.
Upon returning home he married his fiancée, Mary Jo Thornton, of Athens, GA on September 13, 1945. They had three sons, Robert Jr., Keith and Bruce. He was preceded in death by his dear wife of 56 years and son, Bruce. He was a devoted and loving care giver to his wife for many years.
Bob worked 34 years for the Bureau of Reclamation, Department of Interior, at offices in Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona and Washington, D.C. For 12 years he was the Assistant Regional Director of the Upper Colorado Region, Salt Lake City. He completed his career as CEO of the Central Arizona Project.
Bob had many varied interests. He loved golf and had three hole-in-ones. He played regularly up to the age of 88. He also loved bridge, river rafting, fly fishing, the study of fresh water protozoa, and cross word puzzles which he did with a pen. He had a keen sense of humor and a sharp wit.
He was a loving husband, devoted father, brave soldier, and hard worker. At his request there will be no services. He will be buried beside his wife at Riverside Cemetery in Cody, WY.
