Dad passed away peacefully on December 12, 2012, surrounded by his children and was reunited with his sweetheart, Helen Frazer, who had preceded him in death. They were married in May, 1942 and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.
He was an active member in the LDS church and served diligently in numerous callings. He was a temple worker for several years well into his 92nd year. He was a veteran of World War II
in the European theater, and was an engineer for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad from which he retired after 42 years. He was president, then Chairman of the Board for the Rail Ops Credit Union which later became Transwest Credit Union. He served as a Senator in the Utah State Senate for 24 years. He retired from the Senate to take care of his sweetheart in her declining years. He took great pride in being an Honorary Colonel, and was on the board of the Northwest Multipurpose Center. He donated many of his woodworking projects to the center to benefit the Head Start Program.
He was an avid golfer and had a hole named after him at Wasatch State Park (The Black hole).
He is survived by his eight children, Susan (Richard) Blackwell, Janet (Colby) Rytting, Cindy (Richard) Fowler, Joy (Scott) Miller, Peggy (Frank) Shay, Vanna (Craig) Roberts, Gayle Kilgrow, and Rex (Adrian) Black. He has 34 grandchildren, 72 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
