1931 ~ 2013
William O. Berge died Thursday, November 7, at the University of Utah Hospital.
Bill was born in May 1931 in Chinook, Montana. His mother, Mina, emigrated from Scotland in 1920. His father, Olai, emigrated from Norway in 1912. His father's work for the border patrol took the family, including his sister Thelma, to several small towns along the Montana/Canadian border. At an early age Bill began to wander in the fields around these small towns, trapping and skinning small animals and later shooting larger animals for their pelts.
In 1948, Bill's dad transferred to the Pigeon River entry point on Lake Superior. The family lived in Grand Marais, Minnesota. Bill graduated from high school in 1949 and entered college in St. Paul. He enlisted in the Navy in 1951 and served for four years as a radio technician. This sparked his interest in electrical engineering and he enrolled at the University of Minnesota
for a degree in this field.
Bill and Mary Clare (Sartor) married in July 1953. They have five children: David, Patricia (husband Bruce), James (wife Melissa, daughter Allegra), Thomas (wife Patricia, children Torger and Katrina), and Richard (wife Laura). Bill began working for the Sperry Corporation in 1958 and worked under its various names until he retired in 1988. The family moved to Utah in 1970.
Utah proved an ideal environment for the family - no mosquitoes, low humidity, and wonderful outdoor activities, which included camping, hiking and fishing in the summer, hunting in the fall and skiing in the winter. Once again, Bill could roam the countryside including the foothills and mountains, and enjoy Great Salt Lake duck hunting.
At his request no memorial is being held. Private burial will take place at a later date. Funeral Directors Aspen Funeral Services
