Donald Jeffs Obituary

Donald Reeder Jeffs
1921 ~ 2014
Salt Lake City, Utah-Donald Reeder Jeffs passed away May 2, 2014 at the age of 93 due to complications from a stroke. He was born in Logan, Utah on May 2, 1921 to Samuel and Rose Reeder Jeffs. His early life through college was spent in Logan, Utah. During WWII he served in the Army and was stationed in New Guinea. He married Anna Lou Giles August 16, 1949 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He received a degree in Civil Engineering from Utah State University and an Education Certificate from the University of Utah. He worked for the California State Water Board while living in Sacramento, California. In 1965, he moved his family to Logan, Utah where he was employed at Utah State Water Research Lab. He left his employment in 1971 to join his wife as co-director of Carden Memorial School which she had founded in 1969 in Salt Lake City. Although he had retired as Headmaster and Director of the school, he continued to help with administration, maintenance and led the 8th grade students on an annual American History Tour for the past 30 years. This year is the first year he is unable to go. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his love of the Savior and service to others guided his life. Classical music, appreciation of art, patriotism, love of America and its history have inspired family, students and all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Anna Lou of 64 years, four children: Laura Brown(Bruce), Vaughan Lawrence Jeffs, Louann Jeffs, Shannon Westover(Kerry); 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. A viewing will be held Friday May 9, 2014 at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive, from 6-8:00pm. Funeral Services will be held Saturday May 10, 2014 at 11:00am Holladay North Stake Center, 4365 So. Albright Drive (2145 East) with a viewing prior to the funeral from 9:30-10:30. The words that come to mind when thinking of Mr. Jeff's are loving, friendly and kind. His eyes always sparkled as he greeted each if us coming to school at Carden. His floppy arm handshakes and big smile are memories I will always cherish. He was an amazing man and I'm grateful I knew him.

I can honestly say that I wouldn't be where I am today without the profound influence Mr. Jeffs had on my life. I've had many great teachers over the years when I was in school, but none were greater. He was in my life during a very critical time and was a very positive mentor and example. The influence Carden School has had on my life shines through to this very day and I believe will continue to shine through this life and throughout all eternity. I don't think any of us who've known Mr. Jeffs will ever have any idea of how much the legacy of his life has had for good in this world. No, not until we enter the next life. I wasn't the best student for sure, but he always had a way of helping me when I needed it. I recall being disciplined for some mischief I and some other boys had contrived and as the rules were, we all received a swat from "the meter stick", as well as a suitable and appropriate punishment. I never held any malice and as an adult appreciate his example of integrity and strong sense of right and wrong. I visited Mr. Jeffs a few times as an adult and he always remembered exactly who I was and always had advice and encouragement to give me. As a leader in the Boy Scouts of America, I've endeavored to pass along his advice to the boys I've had the opportunity to teach. The last time I saw Mr. Jeffs in this mortal life, we had a wonderful visit and departed with an embrace of love and friendship. I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to visit with him that last time. After I leave this life, I look forward to seeing him again, as we all will, through the Sacrifice and Grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. My deepest condolences to Mrs. Jeffs and family. He will be missed, but only for a short time until we are all reunited with our family and loved ones. Amen.

Dear Mrs. Jeff's and Family,
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Jeff's . We extend our sincere condolences.
We will be forever grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Jeff's and Cardenas Memorial School for the fine education provided for our grandchildren: Dallas, Sierra, and Kolton Eichers and Holliann, Jaron, and Bailey McDougal. Not only did they receive an outstanding academic education but were taught core values such as respect, integrity, honesty, kindness and patriotism. Mr. Jeff's took an interest in each student and positively impacted the lives of hundreds of young people - what a wonderful legacy to leave to so many! We will miss him.
Sincerely,
Lynette Eichers

I went to Carden Memorial. I remember when Mr. Jeff would walk the halls and come up and greet me. He taught me how to have a nice firm handshake. Some of my fondest memories are of my time at Carden. I'm so sorry for your loss. He was an incredible man.

Mr. Jeffs was such a sweet and kind man! I would help him at the bank and just loved when he came in for a chat! He would always invite me to come see Carden and when I did, I was blown away by what he and Mrs. Jeffs had created! I hope that it is still this way and will stay that way for future generations!

Some of the greatest heroes in life do not make the daily headlines; such is the case with Mr Jeffs. We are eternally grateful for his commitment, dedication and honor to all good things. We are grateful for all the great times we shared at Carden Memorial and for the amazing spirit there. We reflect daily on our great memories and powerful lessons learned. Thank you. Anna Lou, our prayers are with you and your family. All our love.

Mr. Jeffs was one of the most influential, beloved people of my childhood. I went to Carden for several years and the impact he had on me was enormous. He motivated me to be a lifelong student, to do my best in everything, and to believe in my potential. He showed me individual attention and I knew he cared about me personally. He even came to my wedding reception, even though I had not attended Carden for many years by that time! He will always hold a special place in my heart. My condolences go out to the Jeffs family for your loss, but I know your loss is only temporary. The impact of your family for good lives on through all of the students Mr. and Mrs. Jeffs have touched.

Mr. Jeffs showed a kindness and respect to me that I have forever cherished. Every time I popped in to the old school for a visit he never forgot my name and cracked a delightful smile as he gave my hand his distinguishing, friendly handshake. I felt like he truly cared about what would become of me. I did alright, Mr. Jeffs. Thank you for your wisdom and genuine goodness to me and so many others.

How can you measure the influence and greatness of such a man? Few people have left such an impact on so many in so short a time. I will miss learning from him, from seeing his love and passion for art and history, and especially for teaching. He leaves a legacy in Carden that will carry through the years the fine principles that he helped to establish there. He will be greatly missed.

I am grateful to the positive influence of Mr. Jeffs and his vision for Carden. It has blessed my life and the life of my two children who attended Carden. I am grateful for the things I have learned from him.

Dear Anna Lou and Family,
I treasure the many memories of you and Don we have shared together for such a long time--even before we were all married. Then I was honored to be a teacher at Carden Memorial School, and thoroughly enjoyed that. Don lived a remarkable long productive life, and he will truly be missed. I am so sorry I will not be able to attend his funeral, but we are in California and will be attending a Pasadena Retired Police Force reunion for Bob. I send my love and comfort to all of you. My thoughts and prayers will be with you.

I will always cherish the example, the selfless hours of service and value of education that Mr. Jeffs gave. My memories of Carden, Washington D.C. and even the ski trips will always remain vivid in my mind along with walking the halls. Mr. Jeffs was a true scholar and a gentleman. He lived what he taught. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your life.

Mr. Donald Jeffs was one of the finest men I've had to privilege to know. His and Anna Lou's commitment to quality education, framed by high moral values, will always remain a powerful influence for good in our family. As parents trying to protect our children from declining educational and ethical standards, we cherish the lessons taught them by Mr. and Mrs Jeffs and their caring teachers at Carden Memorial School.

The words of Peter Clarke certainly apply to Donald: "There goes a man who is a friend to love and duty truth. There goes a man to help uplift the lives of wholesome youth."

God bless you, Donald, and your family.

To a great man who taught me patriotism, the value of education, respect for my elders, and gave me my first job.In 9th Grade I was in the first class that he led to Washington D.C., a tradition that he continued for close to 30 years. Even though he is gone what he taught is a part of me that I will always carry. Thanks again Mr. Jeffs

We carry a deep love and respect for the things we learned while involved as faculty and students of Carden. It changed me and our children for the better in many aspects of our lives: patriotism, respect, honor, reverence, arts appreciation, love of great literature, fairness, kindness...Our children and I enjoyed our years at Carden.

Mr. Jeffs was an example to all...we will pray for you in your loss but also pray that it will be a short separation.
