My dearest Luz & Family,
We have been like family, but mostly true friends and our Savior Jesus Christ's Gospel is to love everyone, literally every soul no exception. I love you Luz and each one of your family. All our gatherings and get-together when Bien was still with us will remain forever in our hearts and preciously treasured and surely must continue, because Bien will always be present in spirit especially when we serve each other with "tuyo" and think of him with every bite even to the last one, this is his favorite delicacy.
Luz, I do understand your pains because I've been there and through serious difficult moments 4 times. There are some roads in our life that we must travel alone, even though we may be sorrounded by people we love (families and loving friends). What you are feeling now, cannot be felt by anyone but you, as I experienced this several times.
But dear, please remember you are never alone at all.
Because you're very special, and all your family, and because you mean so much. Please know you're kept in heartfelt thoughts each day. With wishes for your strength and peace and hopes that you can feel. All the caring and support that come your way.
Every single person who loves you and Bien, is walking with you in spirit with great respect. I know that in time you and your loved ones will smile again & truly feel it, and that your laughter together with all your talented beautiful grandchildren will be geniune. But until your pains have gone away and your sadness disappear, don't feel you have to be strong right now. What you are feeling is real and you don't need to feel like you are wrong every time you want to cry. The hurt you are feeling at this instant, in due time of our Lord will difinitely lead you to find an new strength, a new peace and a new happiness. It just takes a little or longer time because Bien will always have his arms and love around you. How blessed we are, that we understand and know the Gospel in true. I love you all very much. You'll always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Luz,
I know this tribute is two months late; neverthe less I want you and your children to know that I have a great respect and love for you and Bein. As I told you in a phone conversation I wish I had called and talked to Bien when the Spirit prompted me last fall. I am grateful I was able to attend his funeral. I was so impressed with your family. Your sons and daughter where young when I worked with you in CES ao I didn't know them. What they said about their father at his funeral gave me the assurance that they loved their father and their mother. It was evident to me that you and Bien put your family first in your life. You can feel good about your priorities in life and even thou you and Bien are apart temporarily you are an eternal family. May our Father in Heaven bless you and your children with the assurance and peace that only a testimony of the truths of the gospel can bring.
Dorothy and I send our love,

Dear Luz,
Going back to our discussion of having prolonged grief, may I admonish you as an older person to seek the help of our Heavenly Father. Your husband who was a leader while in his mortal life is now busy doing the work of the Lord in the spirit world. The Glory of God is intelligence wich he took with him to serve our God where he is again needed badly. He knows your feelings, your aspirations, your loneliness , and I am sure he wants you to focus your remaining long or short life, helping your children attain their utmost potentials while you are still around. You will be together forever in God's own due time. I am not trying to marginalize your grief, because that is the most normal thing for someone to do whenever a love one is gone, but the Lord also teaches us that there is a time for every season, and your time for now is to be happy with your children. They also need you, especially now that their father is no longer around. It's been a huge pleasure for me meeting you and your family Manny and Benet.
Lots of Love,
Mom Eliza

Luz,I had been thinking of you and praying for your well being. You are never out of my mind . Whether you hear from me or not, always remember that you are always remembered in my prayers. You are family and therefore very dear to me. I know what you are going through because I was there. But remember this," If you cry all the time," Bien will never be at peace. Always think of that, will you? Every two weeks I put your name on the prayer roll of the temple. I hope that will help.
Have a good evening. We love you and care for you. God bless you with the blessing you stand so much in need of. Please get a good night's rest.
Love lots from all of us,

Ate Luz,
Few minutes ago I was thinking of Kuya Bien and your family, what I did was to search Bien in google. To my surprised, I read his unexpected schedule of going back to our Father in Heaven.
I know your family when I was in primary and has seen so many good examples. I always cherished those things. Ate Luz, we were together in Quezon City 1st ward and your sister Rowena was my primary mate. Just want to let you know that your family has impacted so much in my life. I will always remember Kuya Bien, his cute smiles, messages, and great examples.

Tribute To A CTE Teacher: Mr. Flores, you will be missed
By Hailee Anderson,
Student, West Jordan Middle School
Mr. Flores (also known as Mr. Flowers) was a well-loved teacher. He was a Career and Technical Education teacher at West Jordan Middle School who recently died of cancer. The entire staff and every student – not just the ones in his classes – were very upset about it. We will miss him so much!
My favorite thing about Mr. Flores was his smile. His smile could brighten anyone's day. He also had a great attitude about teaching. Most teachers just want you to learn stuff, but Mr. Flores would put a twist on every assignment to make it more fun and interesting. He loved his students and wanted them to succeed in their learning. He would encourage us to do our best in everything, and did it with a smile, patience and kindness. I never heard him raise his voice to any student.
I learned a lot from Mr. Flores. We created PowerPoint presentations, we learned the parts of a computer, and we learned how to properly type on the keyboard. Mr. Flores made sure that every student did their best and learned new skills. We had a lot of fun with the assignments. For example, we created PowerPoint presentations on various types of fruit. When it was our turn to present, we brought samples of the fruit for everyone. He always thought of ways to have fun but still get things done.
Probably the most important things I learned from Mr. Flores were patience, kindness, and a love for learning.
West Jordan Middle School students wanted to create something to show their appreciation for Mr. Flores so they wore purple, red and pink and the entire student body formed a huge heart on a field outside the school. LifeTouch took this photograph from high up on a crane to give to his family. You can view the Fox13 story on Mr. Flores here.

West Jordan Middle Students Pay Tribute To Teacher
By: Jaime Theler
West Jordan Journal
Utah
Students of Bien Flores formed a heart in tribute to the popular West Jordan Middle School teacher, who passed away on Feb. 6. Photo of heart courtesy of Lifetouch Photography.
Bienvenido “Bien” Flores had a ready smile that lit up the halls and computer room of West Jordan Middle School.
“He was quite popular with the students,” said Timothy Brooks, West Jordan Middle Assistant Principal. “He was a good teacher—very kind, with never a critical word to anybody.”
Aloha Reynolds, Flores' daughter, said, “My father has always been a teacher. . . He very much enjoyed it.” In junior high, she took one of her father's classes. What she experienced and heard from peers was that he had a very refreshing way of teaching. “He had a sense of humor,” she said. “He always smiled and was rarely cranky.”
Flores seemed a permanent fixture to the approximately 970 middle school students who were required at some point to take one of his CTE classes. But in late September of 2012, he was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer and had to go on medical leave.
The outpouring of love and support from WJMS was “very sweet,” Reynolds said. They made a huge banner covered in well wishes from students. The school also filled a large box with Get Well cards. Reynolds remembered one particular card that said, “We're waiting for you to come back. Until then, we'll just keep typing.”
Flores began chemotherapy in October, but lost the fight with the disease and passed away just three months later on Jan. 31.
Flores' passing deeply impacted the students of WJMS, particularly those in ninth grade, Brooks said. Immediately, students wanted to do something to pay tribute to one of their favorite teachers. The school administration took suggestions and held a vote on the ideas.
On Feb. 6, the entire student body and faculty gathered on a snow-covered field outside the school in the shape of a giant heart. Lifetouch Photography then snapped the picture from atop a crane.
“It took some finagling to get this done,” Brooks said. He expected it the process to take a long time, but to his surprise, it took only twelve minutes.
Lifetouch enlarged the photo to poster-size to present to the Flores family. The school also sold 5X7 copies of the picture and raised about $1500, which they donated to help with funeral expenses.
Reynolds shared that the school sent the family a huge floral arrangement containing her father's favorite flower—Bird of Paradise. She didn't know if they knew it was his favorite flower, but it was very meaningful.
Students also folded dozens of colorful origami cranes. The family displayed them at the funeral, and then everyone who came to the internment dropped a paper crane over the casket, instead of a more traditional flower, as a symbol of teaching being such a large part of Flores' life.
And by the response from the students of West Jordan Middle, Flores was a large part of their lives as well.
Reynolds grew tearful as she spoke of WJMS. “It was very overwhelming to see their outpouring of kindness and concern for our family,” she said. “I was glad that my dad was surrounded by such great teachers and students.”

Dear Ms. Flores,
Thank you for your sweet note of appreciation. It is Jordan School District that should be expressing such appreciation to you for the wonderful work that your husband has done in educating our young people. It is obvious from the love shown by the students to Mr. Flores that he made a great impact on the students he taught and interacted with on a daily basis. His great teaching will be missed by so many.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. We are all very proud to have been able to have been able to be fellow educators with Bien within the Jordan School District. May God bless you and your family.
Most sincerely,

Dear Luz,
I had been just staying home, crying now and then, trying to comfort myself by thinking my goodly brother is fine and happy wherever he is. He has finished his mission here and he is more needed where he is now. This world however beautiful was never meant to be the place that he would call home for all eternity. Though we would not choose to leave a loving Father knows best. And in His time, He lifts us to a place of peace and rest. For He has built a mansion where His children will abide, free from pain and sorrow forever at his side. He said, He'll never leave us to face our trials alone. And though sometimes we fail Him, He never fails His own. And when our choices are less than He would ask, He knows when human courage is unequal to the task.
We can't judge what happens, though tears and questions start. We only see what's visible, but God sees into the heart. And though there maybe many things that we can't explain we can be sure it breaks His heart to see His children's pain. In loving arms He bears us to a quiet place apart, where He mends the wounded heart. And though Bien whom we love so much has left our present sight and passed into a better world of majesty and light.
Someday we will be together in our Father's home above. Where we'll thank Him for His mercy and praise Him for His love. May God ease your sorrow and surround you with his love and may it bring you strength to know our Father's house above is a house of many mansions where His son has set aside special place near Him for His loved ones to abide.
Luz please take of yourself. Your children and grand children still need you. Find comfort in the thought that Bien is happy where He is and is counting on you to be there for all your children and grand children, Okay? God bless you and confort you in your sorrow. We'll always remember you in all our prayers.
Love lots,
Mommy & Family

I heard the sad news about Bien from my sister in CA. I am greatful for your family's visit last June 2012. Inspite of Bien's health he made it a point to visit Ruben's Care Home Facility. You can see my husband's big smile to finally see his long college friend - Pare Bien who drove all the way from Utah to Sacramento CA. As Bien mentioned he wanted to visit Ruben when he heard about the stroke incidents and other health issues. Then Ruben passed away after few weeks. I called told Bien... "your friend just waited for you" Luz, be strong. I know how you feel as I have the same loss - Condolences to you.
Remember the open invitation if you happen to be here in the Philippines please do not forget to visit my family. Prayers and love to you all.

Dear Sister Flores,
The news you sent me about Bien are like the dark clouds that cover Salt Lake City at this moment. I am so sorry for your great and so sudden loss. I have lost my parents and my brother, but I have not yet lost my wife. So I can't fully understand what you are going through. It must be hard, difficult and like you say in your message, something that creates many yet unanswered questions.
I'm very sorry Sister Flores, and ask in prayer our Heavenly Father to bless you and your family. I know that He knows Bien. I know that He loves him and that he has made the next step we are all required to take in the Lord's plan for our salvation. The comforting thought I have for Bien is that he no longer suffers physically from the cancer that devoured him. He is freely, most likely going about doing good and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Spirit World today. I'm also sure that he often kneels to pray for you and your family here on earth.
Bien was a good friend and example to me. He was the catalyst to my joining the Church on March 9, 1968 while we were both attend the Church College of Hawaii in Laie, Hawaii. I'll forever be grateful unto him for his help and blessing in my life.
Again, Sister Flores, please accept my condolences, my sympathy and my prayers on your behalf.
May you have a fine day, even though it is tough to be without your dear Bien.
Warmest regards,

after bien and i spoke at a friend's funeral some years ago, he turned to me and casually asked that i deliver his eulogy when his time comes. i've moved back to the philippines and have forgotten about the request which i brushed off as a mere joke. not until luz reminded me of it in her e-mail to me. of course, it didn't happen because i didn't have time to travel to utah (ok, i didn't have money to buy a plane ticket.). seriously, i didn't realize bien really wanted it that way. anyway, late though it may be, here's what i would have said had i been there: the bien that i knew... i was the editor of our ward's (quezon city first ward's) newsletter when i first encountered the name bien flores. the staff agreed to feature as our headline bien's marriage to luz in hawaii. i inquired about him and got more than i asked for, including the fact that many of our young women have fallen head over heels (pardon the cliche)for him. that wasn't so hard to believe considering that many of the local girls described him as possessing a well-rounded personality (he was attractively slim in his younger years). then he returned to the philippines with his family and we finally met when he became my elders quorum president. we became closer when he joined the church educational system. i supervised luzon and he visayas and mindanao. i became his bishop when his family moved to marikina first ward. he, in turn, became my regional representative prior to his being called a mission president.`in the years we were together, four qualities of his stood out: he loved his chilren without being a consenter, he respected and followed his wife without giving up the pants, he was confident without being arrogant, he was humble without being weak. the first flood (30 years before "ondoy") that inundated provident village, where his family used to live, he and some of our ces co-workers rushed to his family's rescue. floodwater was chest-deep and we were worried no-end. not him. he must have guessed the questioning look in my face. he just matter-of-factly quipped, "my kids are certified swimming instructors." i have never forgotten the lesson he taught me: if you are prepared, you shall not fear. this same attitude he carried with him in his deathbed. jet mariano, a former ces colleague now living in california, was the one updating us concerning bien's battle with cancer. in a phone conversation between them, he related that bien, instead of talking about his woes, was even cracking jokes. he knew the meaning of life... and the end-part of it. he was, as in that day we were worrying about his children in that flooded house, calm and unquestioning. he was, indeed, unquestionably prepared. hats off to you, my friend.

Dear Luz and Family,
I am so sorry to have found out only now that my friend Bien has passed away. Oh how much I would have wanted to see him again and speak with him about our younger days. I also would have wanted to be there for his funeral. I'm so sorry, but I hope that you and your family are recovering well from this great loss. I know where Bien is. I know what he is doing. I know that he misses you, but I know that he is preparing the way for your arrival by his side in the future. And I also know that he prays for your happiness.
Bien was an important instrument in bringing me into the Church. It was his voice that encouraged me to kneel down and pray to find out if the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true. And through prayer I found out almost instantly, and am forever grateful unto Bien.
May God always bless and protect you, till you all meet again with your husband and father.

Hi Luz,
I have more stories about Bien during our university days. Did you know that he tried to convince me to become a Mormon. I did attend your church in Makati once. He did send some of the younger men to my house. My mother (deceased), sister (deceased) and nephew became Mormons. I have not been home for a long time now. But I remember fondly one from Hawaii; he was very good to my family and while he was in the Philippines he visited them fairly frequently.
Regards and keep healthy,
Ruben

Mr. Flores was so kindhearted and funny. One of my friends told me that she walked into his classroom one time and he was singing 'peanut butter jelly time' in his closet. We will always love you Mr. Flores!? Rest in peace.

I remember him always being funny and taking the time to help anyone. I loved his little scooter that he would ride around in the halls. He had a GREAT since of humor! I remember one day when we saw someone outside doing cardio and someone started moaning and gasping for air. It was sad but hilarious because then Mr. Flores said:" He really should get that looked at, it sounds like he is constipated." I will love and miss him for the rest of my life. Rest. In. Peace. ?

I remember Bien as a wonderful teacher to 3 of my children in Price. He was always happy and just a pleasure to talk to and visit with - both at school and in my medical office. He and his wife, Luz, are among my favorite people and my children loved their classes with Mr. Flores. My family will miss him very much and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family.

Mr. Flores was a great teacher and a great man! I took a computers class and a TLC class from him in 2002-2003 at Mont Harmon Jr. high in Price, UT. He was a very happy person, and he made school very enjoyable for his students. He is the kind of person that would still remember my name and recognize me years and years after i took his class. I still remember him telling stories about his days at sea when he was young and about his brother as well. He was a great person who I looked up to, and I know that he is now in a better place. I hope his family will find comfort in that, and in knowing that he had a positive effect on all those around him. He will be missed.

Hi Luz,
It was our pleasure coming to Bien's funeral. When we told the news to our dad, who at that time was still living in California, he wanted to make sure that our family was represented; especially because he wanted to come himself but couldn't.
Our families have been such good friends over the years, that we wanted to share in this experience with you. Good luck to you. I'm sure the Lord will watch over you and your family until you can be reunited with Bien.

Dear Luz and Family,
We were especially saddened and shocked to learn that Bien has passed to the other side of the veil of life. It was a shock because we had no knowledge that Bien was battling cancer. Please accept our sincere condolences with our hope that you will be comforted in this time of sadness. Our memories of Bien is of a cheerful, kind and spiritual brother in the gospel, and of shared happy memories at BYU Hawaii. Bien mirrored in character the nature of his parents who hold a special place in our hearts and our memory.
We are a long way away from you and the family but we want you to know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers.
May God bless Bien. He had such an accomplished life. May he rest in peace experiencing joy in the bosom of of his family and the companionship of his ancestors.

Dear Flores Family,
It truly was a priviledge to have known Bien. I remember him as a very happy and content person. Always had a big smile for me evrytime I see him. He had a strong testimony of the gospel, how do I know that?, it was in the way he behaved among the people surrounding him. He had a gracious and calm demeanor. He will truly be missed!

The small group of saints in San Pablo City in the early 70's were so happy when Bien Flores and his family moved in. He was called as the first Branch President of San Pablo. He built a strong foundation for the branch with his good leadership and taught the saints correct gospel principles. Now San Pablo is a stake.
He was also our first CES coordinator. I remembered him leading Super Saturdays and other youth activities. He was an inspiration to all of us.

We are so sorry for the passing of your husband and father. We had the priviledge of serving with him in the Manila Philippines Temple in 1984-87. What blessing he and Luz were to us as we opened that new temple with only about thirty members who had received their endowments in the temple. Because Bien and Luz had been married in the Hawaii Temple they were such a help to us. Luz served as our clothing supervisor and Bien served as an ordinance worker. We couldn't have done it without them. We remember Bien giving the talk at the first lighting ceremony for the temple because he was a Regional Representative at the time. We love you Luz and wish the very best to you.
You are great.

Dear Ate Luz and Kiddies,
I was deeply saddened by the death of Kuya Bien. This of course must be very difficult for all of you. You are in my thoughts and my prayers.
Kuya Bien was such a kind person, who I will greatly miss. I will always remember his helpful advice to me before I serve my mission, after I served my mission, he was the first person I informed when I received my proposal for marriage and the one who encourage me to accept the proposal if I feel that Murray meet the 4 essential ingredients so to speak for marriage, and if he does and I prayed about it and receive the answer then I should do so regardless of whatever other reasons there might be.
I remember my trip to Utah last November 2012 when I dropped Joseph off for mission. I had a long conversation with him on 2 occasions and on this second occasion I felt that he gave me a blessing even though he did not put his hand on my head because he was in the hospital at the time. It was the most memorable time I had spent with him. He is not real brother to me but I felt that he was, he is not my father but as if he was. His advised and blessings to me will remain with me for as long as I live.
Kuya Bien has passed on to a better place now. You can take comfort and strength from the wonderful family you and he had together. I know his love will get you through this sad time. I am only a phone call and or email away.
May God bless you and your family during this time and always.
Love Always,
Wheng

Dear Mr. Flores,
I really miss you a lot! I loved being in your class. You were my favorite CTE teacher. You were really funny. I remember the first couple of days of CTE you said your name was Welcome Flower (Bienvenido means welcome and Flores means flower) I thought that was really funny. You had the best attitude. You were never upset or in a bad mood. I really loved that about you. You were the only teacher that asked me how I was doing in school or how my day going almost 2 years. I really miss you so much. But it is good to know that you are not suffering with pain. I am really proud of you Mr. Flores, you fought that cancer as much you could. I am gonna miss you! Me and everyone else! I know that you're gonna teach the best CTE Class up there huh! Just make sure you take your mini fridge and mini cokes. I love you so much.

Flores Family-
Mr. Flores was one of my teachers last year. He is by far my favorite teacher I've ever had. He was so funny and never failed to make me laugh. He could always make my day so much brighter. He sure was unique and very much loved. He is an amazing example to me and I look up to him. I could definitely see the light of Christ in him. He was always smiling and doing his best to make others happy. He is the sweetest guy and would always offer me part of his snacks. I sat close to him in class so he would make funny jokes that always make me laugh.
Mr. Flores is definitely a very special person to me and has positively impacted my life. I'll never forget him.

Dear Mr. Flores Family,
Mr. Flores was a great teacher! I had him at the first of the year for only a short amount of time but I loved him.
At first I didn't really like the subject but he made it so fun! I remember once when I asked him to help me with my computer, I expected him to say one sec, or just come over here or something that all the other teachers said but he popped up and said sure! He made my day that day!!
