Pauline Pace Obituary

1919 ~ 2012
Pauline Clyde Pace was born March 13, 1919 to Hannah Mendenhall and Edward Clyde in Springville, Utah and died February 23, 2012 in Salt Lake City. She was a young lady who grabbed hold of life with great zeal and a big sister to five brothers. In addition she was a disciple of Christ, a nurturing mother, a devotee of culture and the arts who travelled the world. Even down to her recently acquired IPAD, she never stopped her quest for learning.
Pauline married Joseph Leon Pace in the Salt Lake Temple in 1942. As a war bride she endured Joe's absence while he served as a flight surgeon in the Pacific. Following World War II they settled in San Jose, California where they raised their family of seven children: Nathan, Craig, Maurio, Malcolm, Niki, Shana and Tia. In 1983 they moved to the American Towers in Salt Lake City. Through 58 years of marriage they experienced grand adventures visiting over 100 countries and coming within a whisker of walking on all seven continents. They collaborated on several books about their lives together including an autobiography entitled We're Not Dead Yet.
Pauline loved and served the Savior. She marked a path for her descendants to follow. With her husband she endured the discomforts of third world humanitarian travel to hot spots such as Somalia, Afghanistan, and Lebanon. She and Joe served four missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: medical service in Mexico and Central America while living in a VW bus; proselyting work in Moscow at the dissolution of the Soviet Union; teaching English to doctors in China; medical service in Argentina. She was a ward Relief Society president at 83 and loved to read, study, and teach the gospel. She served as a hostess in the Church Office Building and spent countless hours at the Humanitarian Center making quilts and providing other service. She remained energetic and independent as she aged.
Pauline was a lifelong patron of the arts. As a young farm girl, Saturday morning radio broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera filled the home with beautiful sounds and lifted her spirits above Depression-era hardships. This love of opera and music was shared with her family and many others. She led an arts program in San Jose and later in Salt Lake City that gave thousands of high school age youth an appreciation of grand opera. In education she sponsored a number of scholarships and endowed a professorship at the University of Utah School of Medicine.
Above all, she was a loving, devoted wife and mother and friend to all. Her final hours were shared by her five living children and many grandchildren who surrounded her bedside. Her reunion with her husband is captured in this text from one of her favorite songs by Richard Strauss.
Through joy and sorrow we have
Walked together hand in hand;
We are resting from our wandering
Now above the quiet land.
A viewing will be Friday, March 2, 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City.
Funeral services will be March 3, 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Meetinghouse on 142 West 200 North, Salt Lake City with a viewing prior to the service, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Springville, Utah.
The family appreciates the employees of the American Towers and the staff of the U. of U. Hospital who helped in her final hours.

Not sure what to say?

We remember most fondly our friend Pauline and her remarkable life of service. Her neighbors, the Beckstrands of San Jose, love and cherish her memory. I'm sure our parents rejoice in their reunion with her and Doctor Pace. Shelley & Judith Beckstrand (61 Glenmont Road, Woodlawn, VA 24381.)

As a youth in San Jose, Pauline, Joe, and their family would often open their home to countless youth activities. They would often visit my mother who was a bed ridden. Because of their love and care, they helped my mother become an independent parapeligic. She continues to be independent at age 80. Her husband Joe would stitch me up several times as I banged myself up. What a reunion Pauline and Joe must have had. What a legacy they have left. They will never be forgotten.

Pauline was one of our first and most delightful new friends when we moved downtown in 2004. She inspired us at church and at cultural events. She was a shining example of lifelong learning and growth. When we planned our foreign teaching assignment, she encouraged us with wisdom and humor. We will miss her, but feel honored to have known her.

We are living out of state right now and I just happened to look at the obituaries. That is something I don't do unless I have someone to look for. Well, I had no idea that Pauline had gone. We knew her when we served an inner city mission and she was that 83 year old Relief Society President mentioned in the article. What a woman! We just loved getting to know her. She has lived so well and is an example of a Christ like life. We are so glad to have known her. We just love her. We send our sincere condolences to the Pace family.

My Aunt Pauline was a wonderful example and role model of talent, accomplishment, energy, enthusiasm, love and caring. She connected to all ages and really strengthened the extended family. I will miss her at family gatherings, but know she is enjoying her reunion with her brothers (including my dad) parents, and Uncle Joe. I Love you. Rixa Clyde Oman

Pauline and her husband taught my husband the gospel in Moscow, Russia 17 years ago. We now have been married 15 years and have a beautiful family with 7 children. Her example of service and cheerfulness was one of the main reasons my husband Sasha converted. We are so happy that we were able to see her this summer before she passed away and show her the posterity in the gospel of one of her converts.

I'm going to miss being with Pauline every Sunday at choir practice, watching her zip through the scriptures on her iPad, and talking with her about music, art, family, and the gospel. She was a true friend. Her example of service, love, learning and faith is a legacy I will forever remember.

Knowing Pauline Pace was one of the choice blessings of living in the American Towers and being a member of the Fourth Ward. She was a great example of a true friend and follower of Christ. We are priviliged to have known her and followed in her footsteps in a small way, as my work assignment has taken us to Moscow Russia, where she and her husband were true pioneers of the gospel. We love you still, Pauline.

Pauline was a delightful friend through Utah Opera events. She hosted our library lecture for years, and I enjoyed sharing a love for the art form of opera with her. I remember how much she enjoyed going to San Francisco Opera performances as well as Utah Opera's, and I recall a particularly fervent discussion of "Die Fraue ohne Schatten." I will miss Pauline - I already do.

Aunt Pauline was my father Grant Clyde's sister. She was always so kind and loving to me and my sisters. Our family is sorry for your loss, but celebrate a life well lived.

Grandma Pauline will be greatly missed. I'm so grateful for her kindness, love, and wonderful example. Grandma Pauline came into my life just as my grandmothers passed away and she helped fill that empty void. I will always be grateful to her for that. I love you, Grandma Pauline. My prayers and love to her children and grandchildren. I know she is looking down and proudly smiling upon each of you!
