Isabel Cannon Obituary

Isabel Hales Cannon
1922-2013
Isabel Hales Cannon-our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend-passed away peacefully at her home on September 28, 2013 surrounded by her family. Isabel was born in Ephraim, Utah on June 1, 1922 to Wayne Brockbank and Belle Wilson Hales into a family of four brothers and one sister.
Isabel grew up in Provo, Utah and attended B.Y.U. where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics and served as the valedictorian for the 1944 graduating class. On June 27, 1947, Isabel married the love of her life George Ivins Cannon in the Salt Lake Temple. Isabel and George founded a home based on love, service and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Into that home, Isabel and George happily welcomed seven children, six daughters in law, two sons in law, 32 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and numerous friends. She loved each and every one of them and they in turn loved her. Isabel gave of herself so completely through a smile, a kind word, a hand crocheted baby blanket, a wonderful meal and a supportive and helping hand. Isabel had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ which she shared through her example and service. From 1966 through 1969, George and Isabel presided over 550 missionaries in the Central British Mission. From 1986 to 1991, Isabel served with George in Hong Kong, the Philippines and the Southwestern United States when George served in the First and Second Quorum of the Seventy. From 1993 to 1996 George and Isabel served as the President and Matron of the Salt Lake Temple. Isabel held many other church callings such as ward Young Women and Relief Society President but she recalled with particular fondness simply serving as an advisor and teacher to "six precious" 16-17 year old girls. Isabel's influence extended beyond her family and church to her service in PTA, Women's State Legislative Council, the Val Norn social group and many other social and community groups. Isabel's legacy of love, service and dedication will continue on in the lives of her family and friends whom she touched so greatly.
The family would like to thank all of those who provided Isabel with medical and personal care prior to her passing, especially Deb Wadley. Isabel is survived by her children George (Corinne), Wayne (Gwen), Grant (Sandra), Kent (Laurie), Douglas (Kristin), Margaret (Les) Tippetts, Mary (Jeff) Clark; 32 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers J. Vern Hales, D. Wilson Hales, Richard W. Hales, Robert H. Hales; sister Margaret H. Bown; and a daughter-in-law Alice Clark Cannon.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parleys 1st and 6th Ward, 2350 South 2100 East. A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, and from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the Parleys 1st and 6th Ward prior to the services. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the LDS General Missionary Fund.

Dearest Isabel,

We are so sorry to hear of your passing, you will be sadly missed. You and George both came into my life at quite a traumatic time for me in 1968. You both gave me so much love and compassion, and be came in a sense my "other Mom and Dad".

Our relationship continued from then until now and I will always treasure all the letters and cards etc over the many years. Whenever you were in England you both visited and I hadn't realised until recently just how blessed I was by those visits. Our condolences go to your family in the knowledge that they know that you have been reunited with George and heaven has two returned angels. Than you both for all your love, God bless, love always, Sister Maureen Parks and family, Birmingham, England

As one of "the six precious girls" I know I am touched that she remembers us as dearly as we all remember and love her.
We are all deeply saddened and grieve for our los of such a beacon in our lives. However, we know she is with her Sweetheart George.
Please accept our deepest condolences, and our love. Your mom was an amazing lady and we love her as Our Isabel.

Oh, my! It's not easy saying goodbye to such a beloved aunt! She and Uncle Bud always made me feel so welcome and loved, as if hearing from me on the phone or having me drop by were the best thing that happened all day! She had a way of making everyone feel so special! She was such an example to me of pure love and of how to live a rich, full life. I feel very blessed to have known her.

Sister Cannon greeted me and all of us with a warmth and broad smile that made me feel at home the very first day. She was elegant and well-spoken. Devoted to their children, but always there for us. With a straight face she explained to the three of us on our first dinner in the mission home about the remarkable dairy system in the UK that produced green milk from cows. I bought it until Elder Allred in Rushden set me straight the very same day he was getting me set up with L plates for my new bike. The Cannon boys with their height and US coaching regularly beat British teams and baptised some of those fellows. The Missionaires, founded by President Cannonn, and the opportunities to work with Elders and Sisters around the mission introduced me to so many mission friends. When asked to call into the Mission Home and speak to President Cannon, his first question was, "Elder, Is the church true?". After a positive response, he made his request. President and Sister Cannon were an important force for good in my life. I draw on lessons they taught me all the time.

When I first entered the mission I was scared to death. I had never been out of Utah when I found myself in the middle of England as a missionary. As soon as I arrived at the mission home there was Sister Isabel Cannon, Mission Mom. Her beautiful smile and warm hug made me feel right at home. Sister Cannon and President Cannon were very loving and patient with me. Now they are together again! My love goes out to all that knew her and will miss her, especially the Cannon family. May God bless you all. Love Sister Dorothy Mae Pugh Wilson

I first arrived in the Central British Mission in May 1969 and Sister Cannon made me feel so welcome. I knew I was in the right place. She lovingly fulfilled my needs when my luggage failed to get to Heathrow and I had to go on to the mission home without my suitcase. My thoughts are with her loved ones and friends that she has left behind. ~Charlene (Jones) Rhodes

Isabel Cannon and George Cannon were the most Christlike mission parent's one could ask for. So kind, caring, concerned and patient. A life long impression was made. Trying to emulate their gentle, loving ways has been a personal goal. To think of that wonderful reunion makes a smile break and joy surge within my breast.

I was a new CBM missionary in 1968 when I met Sister Cannon and President Cannon. No one in my family had served a mission before and I was silently panicked. Their kindness and love saved me and gave me the perfect start to my mission. Sister Cannon's gentle warmth was genuine and Christ-like and I will be forever grateful for her and her husband. I am happy that they are together again. I can easily imagine how they are smiling now!

DEAR CANNON FAMILY.

We were all so sad to hear about Isabel. Our parents and your mom and dad were such good friends from the moment we moved into Parley's 6th.
and your mother was when the first person there when each of our parents died.

And Isabel gave such a lovely shower for Katie when she moved from the neighborhood.

May you always be comforted by the love and the example your mother gave to every one.

Our love and blessings we send to you all.

THE GLEN & HULDA NIELSON FAMILY.

I love George and Isabel. I have felt that way sor over 50 years. I was a new returned missionary when called as a counselor to her father in a bishopric. I spoke at her mother's funeral. I felt that Wayne and Belle, her parents were fantastic parents; they had a great, great family. Isabel was so kind to Karen and me as newlyweds. She and George were great friends as Quorum allies. Every Hale and Cannon that I know measures up to their family origins. Bless you all as you live up to your great heritage. I thank God for Isabel and George, and the rest of the family.

Dear Cannon family & wonderful friends,

I have loved Isabel since I first met and served with her on many Utah community boards.

Isabel also served on my board in the 80's, The Women's State Legislative Council of Utah. Together & with other state-wide delegates we affected many positive changes on The Hill.

Isabel always cared about standing up as a representative for something good in the world.

She always inspired me to do more and carry on against the odds.

I will love & miss her...as you all will.

May God's greatest blessings go with her...until we meet again!

Dear Cannon children,
Your precious Mom was a great role model to me in my growing up years in the Parleys 1st & 6th Wards. I often think of the lessons she taught by example that have enriched my life. Your adoring parents were always together, & supported each other fully, so I can imagine the joy when your Dad could receive his beautiful bride back with him. May you all be blessed at this time with His love.
With love,
Carol Hall Moody

To: The Cannon Family

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. May the Lord continue to bless each one of you for the legacy and sweet sacrifice of love she so devotedly offered to countless lives in her service in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and in the Salt Lake Temple. I had the honor and privilege to meet her on a shared elevator ride in the Temple and knew she was "an elect lady", in which I later discovered who she was. May we continue to follow in her footsteps as she followed the example of the Savior.

She will be greatly missed and always thought of and remembered!

With Loving Prayers,

Sister Dye
