Kathryn Egan Obituary

Kathryn White Egan
1947 ~ 2012
"I'm learning that the end-of-life experience is just as sweet as the beginning. It isn't easy, but it is a special time to turn to our Savior to find peace in Him and in my precious husband and family."
Kathy Egan, age 64, passed away peacefully at home on April 9, 2012, in Sandy, Utah, surrounded by her husband and all seven children, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer.
She was born on November 8, 1947, in Mesa, Arizona, to John C. White and Elizabeth Phelps White. Kathy met her husband, Robert Marshall Egan, at Brigham Young University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Bob and Kathy were married in the Mesa Arizona Temple on December 30, 1970. The family lived in Washington, Georgia, Arizona, Florida and Utah, and Bob and Kathy enjoyed traveling extensively all over the world. Kathy was named Jacksonville, Florida's Mother of the Year on Mother's Day in 1985.
Kathy lived a life of distinction that blessed the lives of many people all over the world. Her priorities were always to put the Lord and His gospel first; her husband, family and others second; and herself third. She was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a beloved teacher and leader, serving as ward Relief Society President twice, stake and ward Young Women president twice each, as a member of the stake Primary presidency and as an instructor and advisor across all auxiliaries. Kathy served as companion to her husband as he presided over the South Africa Cape Town Mission from 2005 - 2008, and was "mission mother" to more than 400 missionaries from 30 countries. She served as a temple ordinance worker and as an Assistant to the Matron of the Draper Utah Temple from 2010 - 2011.
Kathy was preceded in death by her father and mother and is survived by her brother John (Debbie) White, her sister Debby (Gary) Boyd, her husband, her seven children: Erik (Julie), Ben (Holly), Emily (Lewis) Christian, Betsy (Klint) Keller, Christian (Katie), Kelly (Richard) Mear, and Robby (Kelsey), and 27 grandchildren - with two more on the way.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, April 13, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sandy Granite View Stake Center, 9880 South 3100 East, Sandy. Interment will follow at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery. Viewings will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2012, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, and prior to the services at the church on Friday morning from 9:00 to 10:30.
The Egan family thanks Kathy's medical team: Dr. Wallace Akerley, Terry Van Duren, R.N., Julie Bylund, N.P., the infusion nurses and all the staff at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and Hospital for their compassion and concern and sustaining her life while enriching her quality of life.
In lieu of flowers, Kathy requested that donations be made to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation: www.huntsmancancerfoundation.org

As the days and weeks and years pass, and as you have returned to life's routine, I hope you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. It is strange to read a letter from you to me dtd August of 03, and then here in 2024 I look up your family and see that you have suffered such a painful loss of your sweet Kathryn. I did not know her, however she must have been such an incredible wife, mother, grandmother and friend. It is strange to cry tears for the loss of your eternal partner so long ago, but I am.
A little late, but God bless you Bob,
Gunnar

Kathy was a light in my life in Georgia. It was fun that she was married to my next door neighbor growing up.

We were in Tucson a few weeks ago at the temple and I kept looking for the name White on a name tag just in case her parents were still living, still living in Arizona and just might be serving in the temple, especially that day.

We shared many musical experiences together. She even taught piano lessons to one of my girls for a while.

We lost track of both of them as we have both moved and served missions. I believe I did read that Bob had remarried. We have been in and out of Sanpete county since 2007. We have served 5 missions since then.

Our love to your family. I will always treasure Kathy's memory.

I just wish I had gotten to know her better. I love hearing about all the kind, wonderful things she did.

Hakuna Matata! She is deeply missed, but she was fully prepared for her well-deserved promotion to the Spirit World, as she had nothing more to learn or prove in this life. She is again brightening the lives of those who have preceded her to the Spirit World while keeping close watch over us who remain here in mortality. Her spiritual presence is known and felt!

One other voice from the past. I also lived just a few houses from the Whites when we were all growing up. My dad and Elizabeth were great friends and she sang at my mom's funeral. I was more the age of John and I don't remember Kathy other than as a little girl, but I am sure that she had the same qualities as her mother and father and that would make her a very special person. The Gospel is a wonderful comfort during these times of change and it really does take the sting out of loss. May the Lord's choicest blessings be upon all her family.

I just found out today (April 15th) about Kathy's passing--a great loss to all who knew her. Kathy is a dear friend, even from my childhood. I loved Sis. Egan, and I still do. I had the blessing of babysitting her daughter Kelly's kids every week for a year or so, and I've had plenty of opportunities to associate with Sis. Egan. She left such a huge and lasting impression on me. She is truly an example of a follower of our Savior.

I loved Sister Egan! She smiled with her whole body and made everyone feel loved and welcome. I loved her hugs! I have fun memories of making gingerbread houses and art projects at her kitchen table, of getting ready for dances in the upstairs bedroom in Georgia, and of her giving me dating advice! I am grateful for the memory I have of her bringing Emily to our first day of kindergarten. Emily was crying, and Sister Egan wrapped her in her arms and just loved her. Thank you Sister Egan for having a mother's heart. I love you!

We express our condolences at the loss of your sweet Kathy. Our memories of Kathy go back to our college days. Kathy was marvelous then and she only got better. It has been 20 years since we were in Georgia and knew sweet Kathy. I was a young married, expecting my first child, and far away from my Utah home. That child is now 23 and married. Kathy was RS pres and so very kind in every way. Hearing of her passing has brought back sweet memories of her goodness in a time when I needed her. May you be blessed with the comfort that the savior brings, as you adjust to her passing. What a blessing it was to have known her.

Dear President Egan,
We were so sorry to hear of Kathy's passing. She spoke to our Relief Society and we all loved her talk. I can still remember when the two of you did the seminar of Men from Mars and Women from Venus and the visual table that was divided in half. May the love of the savior be with you and your family at this sad time. You both are a great example to everyone.

Christian & Katie, We first met Kathy at Christian's 30th birthday party. I remember when we all started singing "Happy Birthday" that she started clapping her hands to speed up the song and reminded us that "this is a happy song." Since then, every time I sing it, I have thought of her & done the same to keep it happy. She was so kind & gracious. I'm grateful for the time she & your dad took to help my parents prepare for their mission to South Africa. I feel so honored to have known her. What a truly remarkable woman! Our thoughts & prayers are with you.

April 12, 2012

Bob and Family - We would like to send our love to you and your beautiful family at this time, and let you know how we loved Kathy. For your dear, sweet grandchildren, your Grandmother has left a treasure of a legacy for all of you to follow. Kathy loved her family! As friends and neighbors for 23 years, your family has always been such a great example for us. We always knew that when our son Eric was at your home he was in good hands. I will always remember our "quilting times" together. She had just finished a beautiful, colorful, quilt for Kelly's new baby boy - arriving soon. She was so excited to share it with me a week before she passed away. She said that Bob had helped her finish it - She also expressed her deep love for all of you that evening. I will always cherish being able to spend that time with her. We are so thankful to have been "one of the squares" in Kathy's "Quilt of Life" We feel it a real pleasure to have known her. We will miss our dear friend, her beautiful smile and Christ-like love for everyone. Love Always, Kevin & Wendy Farnsworth & Family

April 12, 2012

As an assistant stake clerk years ago, we grew to love the stake president and his upbeat, inspirational wife. She wasn't only wonderful and spiritual, but fun and funny as well. We never failed to see a contagious smile on her pretty face. Again in the Draper Temple, Sharon and I had the opportunity to serve along side Bob and Kathy. What angels they both are. And with a death in our family, they knew what to say and do to comfort us and take care of us. We will miss Kathy terribly, but "Our Savior, in His infinite wisdom, will make all things right". Kathy led an eternal marriage and an eternal family, and the Lord will restore both to a fullness of joy in the future. Kathy, we love you and Bob!

I feel like Kathy loved me like the Savior did, unconditionally. She saw the greatness inside me, even though outwardly I was quite an ugly and awkward teenager. She made we want to become the person she thought I was. What a great blessing to know her on earth. It is no fun to get left behind, but I know that she was welcomed with a huge hug from the Savior, and that we will see her again.

Hugs and prayers.

One way that can describe Sister Egan's personality and her way of treating others is 'sincere unconditional love towards all around her'. She will be greately missed by those whose lives she blessed with her prensence. She will always be a phenomenal woman. Her life and teachings are indeed celebrated and evident in the lives of the many missionaries she taught how to be men, women and Serving Always Christ The Master. May we make the main thing, the main thing as she taught, put ourselves third as she suggested and be our best selves at all times. We will always love you Sis Egan and you'll always be our BELOVED MOTHER!

April 12, 2012

Dear President Eagan. It was a singular privilege to serve with you and Sister Eagan. We send to you our condolences but know that because of your love for the Lord you will be comforted. Sr. Egan is my mission mum! She was always considerate, compassionate, and kind. Her teachings had a greater impact as a result of her personal application of the very principles she shared with us. By her fruits I have come to know her as a most incredible woman, and I am grateful for my friendship with her. My condolonces to my mission dad, President Egan who equally holds a special place in my heart, and to your family whom I would love to meet someday.

Sister Egan had such a special spirit she carried with her. Her smile brightened the heart. She was a loving mother, best friend, spiritual giant and above all her hands were always stretched out and welcoming to everyone. I came to know the true meaning of love through her great example. Dear Bob and Family,
I will always remember Kathy as the "Georgia Lady" who smiled and waved each morning while I was on duty as Safety Patrol at Granite Elementary. How thrilled I was to later learn that this sweet woman was married to my dad's cousin! Her smile and gentle ways made her a special lady. I have admired how she took on motherhood as an honorable role in raising her many children. Kathy has truly left behind a legacy. Until we meet again, may the Lord be with those who are left to remember Kathy. My thoughts are with you all at this time.

I remember meeting Kathy for the first time when we moved into the neighborhood. We spoke as she worked in her garden. She was extemely friendly and welcoming. She later continued in her warm and pleasant way to always welcome Matthew over to play with Taylor. With such a large and loving family this always made Matthew feel special. One evening, when the sun was shining and she was planting flowers, we spoke about the importance of family. It is a conversation I will always treasure. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Robert, Ben, Holly and all of her children, grandchildren and family. The Monosson Family

Our dear Sister Egan will be so missed. I only knew her from her work at our Draper Temple. What an example! What a large spirit she had tucked into such a tiny body! Each day as I enter the temple and the wind is blowing (as it usually is), I think of her calling them the "welcoming winds of the temple". I am sure she now is welcomed home to her new "home" on high where she will be able to watch over all of her loved ones...

Ever since the day we first met Kathy in the hall of the Roswell Ward chapel, we loved her. As a newly married couple, she opened her arms to us and we became, at that moment, lifelong friends. Kathy was so easy to love! Her bright, happy personality was infectious, her positive outlook on life was a blessing to all who knew her. Our love and prayers go out to you Bob and your darling children, their spouses and your greandchildren. We love you all. Please know that we are thinking of you at this difficult time and you will be in our prayers as you move forward without your sweet wife, mother, and grandmother until you meet her again. May the comforting influence of the Spirit strengthen you bless you.

Kathy was one of the most beautiful women I have ever known due to her good heart and kind loving ways. Throughout my life I have often thought back during my high school years how Kathy always made me feel welcome and special in her home. Having not seen her for 30 years (until 3 years ago) she still had that Christ-like quality of making one feel unique and special. Indeed she will be sorely missed until we met again. We send our love to Bob and their children and grandchildren and Bob and Kathy's siblings. What a legacy you, as well as the rest of us have, to embrace and follow. Our prayers are with you all.

Kathy is one of those very special people you know in life whose smile truly warms your heart. She was the first person I met walking into the church when we moved to Jacksonville, and she welcomed us with open arms and made us feel like family. Her faith and willingness to serve others is a strength to all that know her. Bob my deepest condolences to you and your wonderful family. Know you are in my heart and prayers.

With sincere love,

Kathy was my dear childhood friend and I am so grateful for her example to me for over 50 years. The White home and Kathy's friendship helped me through some rough years and I have never known a sweeter or more Christlike person. Love you forever Kathy!
