ARCHIE EGBERT Obituary

Archie Osborne Egbert 9/19/1931~12/17/2009 Archie Osborne Egbert, 78, died at his home in Salt Lake City, in the presence of his family, from causes related to Parkinson's disease.A viewing will be held at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 S. 2300 E, Sunday December 20th, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Monday December 21st at the Garden Heights Ward chapel, 2220 E. Fisher Lane, preceded by a viewing from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Archie, the fifth of six children born to Archibald Duncan Egbert and Christina Nyman, grew up in Cache Valley, Utah. Following his two 1/2 year LDS Spanish speaking mission in Texas and New Mexico, he married Mary Ann Shanks on November 27, 1953 in the Logan Temple. They are the parents of six children: Archie, Bob, David, Tresann, Laura, and Marisa. He is survived by his wife, children, sister, Fern Van Orden, brother, Larre Egbert, and had 30 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Arch loved history, economics, and political science and received his Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. in those fields. He loved and taught religion for nearly 40 years at the LDS Institutes of Religion at Arizona State University, University of Utah, and LDS Business College. He loved his students and found tremendous joy in serving and working with them. He was a life-long devoted student and to the end of his life was frequently reading and discussing history, the gospel and the scriptures. Arch loved the men and women he worked with as a Chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserve and experienced a great sense of meaning and purpose in serving in that capacity. After retiring as a Colonel, he continued to serve at the VA Hospital as a Chaplain as long as he was able to do so. Arch loved sports. He enjoyed playing and coaching baseball and basketball and he especially enjoyed watching, talking about, and analyzing the Yankees and U of U basketball and football. Arch loved the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking people. He especially cared deeply for those he knew, served, and worked with in Chile, Spain, Colombia, Arizona and Utah. He and Mary Ann lived outside the United States for over nine years working as a Church Education leader in Chile and Spain and serving as a Mission President in Chile and Colombia. Arch loved to serve. Serving his Savior Jesus Christ was the most notable of his many attributes. He was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was the epitome of a leader. He loved those he served. He knew those he served. He knew their telephone numbers, names, strengths and needs. Whether serving as a quorum president, bishop, mission president, home teacher, or priest quorum advisor, Arch knew his flock and served them by believing in them and consistently reaching out to each individual. He taught and lived the precepts of commitment and follow through. Arch loved people. He treated everyone equally and would strike up conversations at any time or place. If he ever gave preferential treatment to others, it was to the underprivileged, the defenseless, and the marginalized. Called to serve. These three words describe how he lived as a husband, father, teacher, leader, friend and associate. His service blessed others, lifted them and made them better people. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the LDS Church Missionary Fund. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.holbrookmortuary.com

I had the honor of serving with Elder Egbert in the Spanish American Mission. We entered in the same group at El Paso, Texas Jan. 17, 1951. We started in the SE-New Mexico Dist. I was Dist. President's companion, and witnessed his early development.

Dear Sister Egbert and Family

It was my pleasure to get to know Brother Egbert as we worked at the VA. I saw his decline through the years , I also saw the things that brought him joy. He spoke often to me of his adopted grandchild and the monuments along the way. I am saddened to hear of his passing, faith helps us to know he is in a much better place and we will have a chance to see him again. I wish all of you the comfort of the spirit at this time. I am sorry I will not be able to attend services because I am just hearing the news and I am at work.Take care, stay strong.

It is with sorrow that I extend our condolences to the Egbert family for their loss. Bishop Egbert truly embodied good Christian fellowship. He loved life and all wholesome experiences that one can get from this life. He really did enjoy basketball and its competitive experience, especially when he shared it with his sons.

Dear Sister Mary Ann Egbert and Family,
I had the blessing of knowing your beloved husband, father and grandfather when he was just a little boy living in Smithfied. Your sister-in-law, Fern, is among our diearest friends
We rejoice with you in the Plan of Happiness and to know that we all may be together once again. How proud we are of your many years of service in the Lord's work. Having served five missions with my sweetheart, Beverly, presiding over Paris and Ivory Coast, I know Archie could not have done his marvelous work without his devoted wife at his side!

We will be sending a gift of money to the Perpetual Education Fund in his memory. We send to you our love and sympathy.
Blessings to you , Willis and Beverly Waite.
