Bert Carpenter Obituary

Bert E. Carpenter 1926 ~ 2005 Bert E. Carpenter, "almost 79," passed away May 18, 2005 peacefully at his home from multiple myeloma cancer. Bert was born May 23, 1926 in Manti, Utah, the only child of Edwin S. and Bertha Denison Carpenter (both deceased). Bert married Carol Peterson of Ephraim in the Manti Temple on July 3, 1959. They moved into their Salt Lake City home August 3, 1959 and have been there since. They have one son, Craig, and his wife Elaine. He graduated from Manti High School and then served in the U.S. Army for two years during World War II. He graduated from Snow College and got his B.S. degree from U.S.A.C. (Now Utah State). He taught school for 30 years, grades two thru 12. Starting in Huntington in Mechanical Arts, then four years in Sterling as a teaching Principal, teaching 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. In the Granite District he taught 25 years, mostly 4th grade at Oquirrh Hills Elementary. Three years after retiring he worked another 18 years at Dan's as a bagger. He always enjoyed auto mechanics and working with cars, especially prizing his '53 Hudson Hornet. Bert has always been an active member of the LDS Church, serving in many positions including Young Men's secretary, teacher, "Greeter" at the door, and 100% home teacher for many years. He was very supportive of Carol's activities and all church callings were "family callings." He was an active member of American Legion Post 31 (Manti) for over 50 years. During his teaching years he was a member of G.E.A. and a Life Member of U.E.A. and N.E.A.. Bert enjoyed people, camping, out-of-doors, jeep riding, photography, music (playing the clarinet, singing in choirs), and family and friends. Special thanks to the loving and professional CNS Hospice nurses Debbie and Barbara, also Leni and other staff. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 21, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Winder 2nd Ward (1361 East 4000 South, SLC). Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary (255 So. 200 E., SLC) and Saturday at the Ward from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Graveside with Military Honors by Legion Post 31 of Manti will be at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Ephraim Park Cemetery. Dear Carol and family,

We extend our deepest sympathy. I am the youngest son of Geneva Denison Clegg. I haven't been around Utah in recent years but I remember Bert from Denison reunions years ago. I remember he and his dad advocating Hudsons. He was a good man.

Dear Carol,

What a nice man Bert was. And you, too. He will be missed. It is so sad to see so many of the Denison posterity now getting along in years. Maybe the younger generation will have to hold the torch from now on. As you know Bert's mother was one of the 12 Denison family from Manti. They have a rich tradition of family togetherness. I can only imagine Bert being hugged and tears flowing as he meets all those on the other side waiting for him to pass their portals.

Thank you, Carol for being the ombudsman (ombudswoman?) of so many of the Denison activities. You are an angel.

Carol and Family:

We are sorry to learn of Bert's passing. We know how much you will miss him - it will not be easy. Sometimes I believe that it is our knowledge that families are forever that helps us get through the loss of a loved one. I know Heavenly Father will give you the strength you will need at this time in your life. Our prayers are with you at this time and know that Bert will be there to see you through it. Our best to you at this time, Ken and Thora (Dennett) Searle.
