Blaine Nielsen Harmon Obituary
Blaine Nielsen Harmon
1931 ~ 2014
Salt Lake City, UT-Blaine Nielsen Harmon returned to his heavenly home August 31st 2014 after battling pulmonary fibrosis.
Born October 12, 1931 in Cache Valley, UT. Blaine was the oldest child of Israel Child Harmon and Ruby Nielsen Harmon. At the age of 13, his family moved to Salt Lake City, UT where he spent his teenage years and graduated from South High School in 1949.
In 1951, he served a full-time mission to Southern California for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was sealed to Barbara Jean Whitmore in the Salt Lake Temple, on June 22, 1953. Their union was blessed with six children. Blaine was drafted into the army in 1953 and he and Barbara spent a year in post-war France, where he served as a stenographer.
With a keen mind for business and an entrepreneurial spirit, Blaine was an early investor in the Midas Muffler franchise. Over the course of his 38-year career, he grew the business in Utah from one location to twelve, with shops from Ogden to St. George. Along the way, he earned every award offered by Midas International, including National Dealer of the Year in 1984.
Blaine and Barbara gratefully served in the Salt Lake Temple for 15 years. Temple service was a choice, life changing experience for them. Blaine was called on a second mission, with his favorite companion, Barbara. In January 2005, they began their eighteen month service in the London South Mission.
Blaine was an avid Utah Jazz fan. His children loved attending the Jazz games with him. Many summers were spent enjoying boating on Utah lakes. Cherished family memories were created while having fun together. His family always smiled at his thrill with watching Nascar racing--saying that the roar of the engines gave him goose bumps. Uplifting music touched his heart, and he encouraged the musical talent in his children and grand-children. However, nothing in his life could compare with the joy of being a husband, father, grand-father and great grandfather, with a posterity currently numbered at 62, and growing.
A loving example of faith, gentleness, generosity, spirituality and integrity, he has left his family a righteous heritage.
Blaine is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Whitmore Harmon; six children, Niel (Marsha) Harmon, Teri (Andy) Wariner, Debbie Katter, Stacy (Ron) Ogden, Rick Harmon, Nancy Harmon; 18 grand-children, 23 great-grandchildren, and his sister Kay Olsen. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Milo.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday September 6, 2014, at Monument Park Stake Center, 1300 South Wasatch Drive, Salt Lake City, UT. Viewings will be held at the same location Friday September 5, 5:00 to 6:45 PM, and Saturday 9:30 to 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the missionary fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment will take place at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery.
