Dave Hess Payne Obituary
1928 ~ 2015
The shade of death
Lies on thy face, beloved.
But the Lord of Grace
Stands before thee
And peace is in his mind.
Sleep, O sleep in the calm of all calm,
Sleep, O sleep in the love of all loves,
Sleep, beloved, in the Lord of life.
-Steven R. Lawhead

"See You in the Morning"

David Hess Payne ran with perseverance and finished his race at home, September 6, 2015, after a lengthy illness, just shy of his 87th birthday.
He was born (on the kitchen table) September 27, 1928, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the only child of Joseph Ledrew "Bob" Payne and Erna Genevieve Hess. David attended East High School and received a law degree from The University of Utah. He served stateside in the US Army. David became a successful corporate lawyer with Surety Life Insurance Company, and eventually General Counsel, Senior Vice President and Secretary, and a member of the Board of Directors. He ended his career as legal counsel with Utah Power and Light.
David fell in love with Nancy Margaret Kretchman at Bryce Canyon National Park, and they were married June 16, 1951, in the Cathedral of the Madeleine. They loved their family, grew gorgeous gardens together, camped with their kids, grandkids, and best friends in the scenic beauty of Utah, read voraciously, and traveled the world together. David joined Nancy in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ in 1975, and he was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith.
Their marriage has been a blessing to many friends and family! David (Dad, Pops, Grandpa, Papa) is loved and missed by his wife of 64 years, his children David Graham (Susan), Catherine Lois Craner (Steve), John Robert (Brenda), Robert William (Jenne), and Steven Hess (Jane), his twenty grandchildren (one deceased), and his nine-and-counting great-grandchildren - a tremendous family to provide for!
A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church, 1975 South 2300 East. A vigil service will be held Friday, September 11, 2015 at 7:00 p.m., also at the church, where friends may call from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Committal, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive. Funeral directors, Neil O'Donnell and Sons.
In lieu of flowers, David requested that contributions be made to Catholic Relief Services or Catholic Community Services. Hasta la Vista Daddy!
