DeAnn Atkinson Barton Obituary
DeAnn Atkinson Barton
1932 - 2018
DeAnn Atkinson Barton, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, finished a life of love and service to family, friends, and church on May 8, 2018. Free of pain, she joins her Heavenly Father and her loving family beyond the veil.
The first child of James Rudy and Blanche Loretta Webb Atkinson, DeAnn was born October 20, 1932 in Lehi, Utah. She grew up in Salt Lake City and attended East High School where she joined the ROTC Sponsor Corps. After a handsome young officer by the name of William R. Barton (Bill) taught her how to shoot a rifle, she joined the Rifle Club and entered many regional sharpshooting competitions. Much to the delight of her father, she won many medals and out-shot her future husband, Bill. While studying art, accounting, and bookkeeping at the University of Utah, she and Bill were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on March 20, 1952.
A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she was a natural leader and served in the Relief Society Presidency, Primary and Boy Scouts. She was also Captain of the Ann Briggs Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
Her first priority was her family. She supported her children's and grandchildren's varied interests, including housing their snakes, turtles, and giant tropical iguanas (which she carried around on her head). She was so involved in their lives, that all their friends affectionately referred to her as their mom and grandma as well. Many summers were spent with family and friends boating, water skiing, and camping. All of the children and grandchildren were excellent at water skiing and all knew how to handle the family's high-powered motor boat.
In addition to being a talented artist, DeAnn's accomplishments extended to interior design, sewing, gardening, cooking, and sharpshooting. For over three decades, she also managed the apartment properties the family had owned, taking on every problem that needed fixing, and then some.
She and Bill loved to travel. They explored many new places and cultures all over the world. She always returned with a suitcase full of treasures and exotic new recipes to share with family and friends.
DeAnn is survived by her husband; daughters, Debra Nordfelt and Teri (Robert) Shaw; daughter-in-law, Karen Barton; son, Dave (Anne) Barton; sisters, Barbara Bohne, Kay (Robert) King, and Carol (Ted) Hallen; 9 grandchildren, 6.9 great grandchildren (#7 is on the way), many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, James Riddell Barton; and grandsons, James William Barton and Michael Barton Nordfelt.
Her life and legacy will be celebrated at a memorial service on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the LDS chapel at 165 S 1000 E in Bountiful. Interment will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
Friends and family are invited to a viewing at the LDS chapel prior to the service from 9:45-10:45 AM. There will also be a viewing Wednesday, May 16, 2018, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Russon Mortuary in Bountiful. Visit http://www.russonmortuary.com for additional details.
