GEORGE DENOS Obituary

George W. Denos Let all my life be music The heavenly choirs needed another tenor, and so our beloved husband, father, and grandfather was called home on July 14, 2010 after a long battle with cancer in which he remained optimistic to the end. George Willyns Denos was born in Salt Lake City on May 7, 1929 to Solomon "Sam" Denos and Antje "Annie" Willijns Denos. He married Marian Barlow on March 11, 1950 and later married Laura Smith Barlow on September 19, 1960. The three great loves of George's life were his family, his music, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. George sang in many productions at West High School, BYU, with the LDS Quintet as he served in the armed forces in Germany, in the Salt Lake Opera Company, the Utah Oratorio Society, and was a soloist with his beloved Swanee Singers for 61 years. Among the many hats he wore in his professional life were those of machinist, carpenter, salesman, businessman, and postal worker, but his favorite was his retirement job where he delivered meals on wheels to seniors around the valley. All of his clients became his dear friends - many requesting that he sing as he delivered their meals. Preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, two sisters, and one grandchild, Cody. He is survived by Marian and Laura, one brother, four sisters, and a large and loving posterity who will miss him greatly. We love you, Sweetheart, Dad, Grandpa, and we look forward to being with you in the eternities. Until we meet again, with love, Your 27 "angels with a beta fork" Funeral services will be Mon., July 19 at 11 a.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 E. 10600 S. A viewing will be held Sun., July 18 from 6-8 p.m. and 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services Mon. Interment will follow at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery.

Dear Laura & Colleen & family:

I was very saddened to hear of George's passing. The news took me back to the days when you lived across the street from my brother Dan. My brother and his family always had a wonderful connection with your family. George was always such a pleasant gentleman. Cherish the wonderful memories you all had with him and take comfort in knowing that his suffering is past and his legacy lives on. Colleen I have thought about you down through the years, the times you spent at my house with my neice Tina. My sincere condolences to all of you. May God comfort you and bless you with His peace.

Grandpa
You are the true definition of that word. I feel so thankful my kids and I had the opportunity to know and love you. What a great example you are to us. I hope to one day inherit your wonderful optimism and gratitude in all things. I will miss our yearly Vegas trips (trying to keep up with you walking so fast). I can't wait to hear your amazing singing voice again. I miss and love you.

As Aunt Stephanie so appropriately eulogized, Grandpa lived the principle of "if you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all." After a decade of Sunday afternoon chats you'd think you'd hear even the greatest of men utter a word of discontent or dissatisfaction about one thing or another. Not so with Grandpa. Not once. He always looked on the bright side, sought solutions and offered support. And the fact was, there was probably plenty for Grandpa to worry about or feel frustrated with. But he never passed judgment or discounted anyone. He made it his job to build people up and point out the positives - even if it wasn't the popular thing to do.

I learned a lot from Grandpa. I learned how a hug and a warm individual greeting to every person in a room (including the littlest of babes) could set the tone for the afternoon. I learned how an old married couple could disagree with a smile (and how smart husbands always defer to their wives :)... And I learned the power of positive thinking, as I believe without a doubt it extended his life - indeed his quality of life. But most of all, I learned to treat others as you would like to be treated and to speak kind words - even when others around you might not do the same.

I'd like to think all of those who knew Grandpa will take some small piece of him with us by incorporating one of his beloved traits into our own lives. I could never dream of doing it as well as Grandpa, but this lesson of "kind words" is one I think I'll put in my pocket. In this small way, I hope to contribute to keeping the spirit of George Denos alive and well.

Thanks Grandpa for inspiring me to want to be a better person. Thank you for a loving legacy we can all be proud of. Thank you for more than I could ever write here, including saving Jason's life in more ways than one. I love you.

George, I was quite fortunate to get to know you these last few years when Sharlene and I would come visit. You always impressed me with your positive outlook on life, your ability to put away plate after plate of your wife Marian's amazing biscuits and gravy, and your love of singing. How wonderful for all of us, your audience, that your voice was so beautiful. I will greatly miss you.

good example to me and my sons on how to honor the daughters of God. Thank you for giving me your choice daughter's hand in marriage. Families are forever!
P.S. Please help the Jazz win the big one...

George and I worked the night shift as Christmas temps at the Main Post Office in 1991. We spent many lunch breaks together but didn't see each other after that. George was a real character and I always hoped our paths would cross again. My sincere condolences.

Dad you have taught me so much. I used to feel bad cause I didn't know you when you were younger, and I heard so many great stories. However, being the youngest of such a big family I was one of the only kids to have one on one time day after day and those times, I will never forget. I miss you dad.

When life gave you lemons and we didn't have enough to make lemonade, you showed us that was ok.Thanks for being such a positive role model and great example. Marian and family,
We were saddened to hear of George's passing. We enjoyed our association with him as a neighbor in the old West Jordan days. We honor him as the father of those of his children we grew to love and respect from that same time frame. Nothing speaks more highly of a man than having children who honor his name, as do each of you.
You are in our hearts and prayers.
We love you.

As a young child through to adulthood, I remember listening to George sing with the Swanee Singers. I would attend the rehearsals with my father, Walt Malmborg, and learned to sing all the songs they sang. I remember his sweet Tenor voice and I wondered how he could sing so high. I'm positive the Swanee Singers will be reunited in heaven and they will make a tremendous addition to the grand Heavenly Choir.

My words will never fully express how much I love him. I am the man I am today because of you, Dad. There wont be a day I am not thinking of you. With all my love.

I knew George Denos only briefly but over the years have heard many wonderful things about him from his grandson. And if a person's legacy is measured by the love of those he left behind, then George most certainly was a great man. I know the pain that loved ones feel at times like this and hope that your sorrow will be tempered somewhat by the many wonderful memories of a kind and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend. It was my privilege to have hired George in his 'retirement job' at Meals on Wheels where he served for many years. He was always so happy, dependable and helpful to the staff, clients and volunteers. I could always count on him when we needed extra help or when we were shorthanded. I tried to hire him back twice after he left but he was having too much fun he said enjoying time with family and traveling with his sons. We missed him when he left and miss him again now. The family is in our thoughts and prayers.

George was a wonderful man and I am honored to have known him.
