Gertrude Welsh Obituary
1936 ~ 2017
Gertrude Louise Welsh died on February 21, 2017 in Bend, Oregon. Born, Mary Barbara Welsh in Salt Lake City, Utah, on October 11, 1936 to Dr. Thomas F. Welsh, and Helen Serena (Reid) Welsh. She was the granddaughter of three-term Mayor John F. Welsh and Theresa Agnes (Foley) Welsh of Park City, Utah, one of the early Irish founders of Park City along with his extended and inter-related family of many other Irish pioneer families in the silver mining area.
Mary Barbara graduated from Judge Memorial Catholic High School in 1954. She attended nursing school at Holy Cross Hospital and graduated with her nursing degree in 1957. She took her nursing and Holy Order vows in 1959 with the Sisters of the Holy Cross, and changed her name to Sister Gertrude Louise Welsh to honor her maternal aunt Gertrude Louise Reid, who had cared for her and her siblings, John and Helen upon the untimely passing of their parents in 1945 and 1948 respectively. She later received her Master's Degree in maternity nursing from Columbia University, in New York City. She worked as a midwife for many years, bragging to one and all about the thousands of youngsters she successfully delivered. After leaving the religious order, she moved to Oregon where she reveled in her many hobbies, knitting Christmas stockings for one and all, photography, leather work, cooking and sound and video editing. She turned this last hobby into her final profession and traveled extensively recording many conferences, special events and weddings. In her later years, she was limited by many physical ailments, but she always kept moving and refusing to let them inhibit her. She rarely missed events of note in the lives of her large, extended family of cousins, nephews and nieces and their children.
She is survived by her brother, John Francis Welsh and sister-in-law, Mary Sullivan Welsh, of Salt Lake City, Utah, sixteen nieces and nephews (Welsh and Lytle families), as well as cousins, Gay Gallivan McDonough of Salt Lake City and Donald Bambenek of Gig Harbor, Washington. Thanks also to her many dear friends in Bend, Oregon as well as the staff of Laurelhurst Village in Portland, Oregon.
Mary Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, brother; Thomas Francis Welsh, Jr., sister and brother-in-law; Helen Frances (Welsh) Lytle and William Hamilton Lytle.
A mass and celebration of her life will be held at St. Clare Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon on March 24, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Additionally, a mass will be held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 25, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery (275 U Street, Salt Lake City, UT), where she will be laid to rest with her parents, brother, sister and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a gift in memory of Gert be made to St. Clare Catholic Church (8535 SW 19th Ave, Portland, OR 97219).
