James Christopher "Jim" Weeks Obituary
1931 ~ 2016
Jim, age 84, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2016 in Salt Lake City.
He was born on April 26, 1931 in Springfield, Massachusetts to C. Francis Weeks and Mary Moran Weeks. He spent his early years in Springfield and Brockton MA, and graduated from Edward Searles High School in Methuen, MA. He attended Stonehill College and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1953 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He married Jennie Frances "Jean" Barnes on August 27, 1955 in Lawrence, MA. Jim served 3 years in the U.S. Army. Following his honorable discharge, he took a job with the Hercules Powder Company. In 1964, Hercules relocated Jim, Jean and their two young children, Sharon and Jim, Jr. from the east coast to what became their permanent home in Salt Lake. After a long and successful career with Hercules, Jim retired in 1992. But retirement was brief. Shortly after leaving Hercules, Jim took a volunteer position at Primary Children's Hospital in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where he was a fixture for the next 20 years.
Throughout his life, Jim was an avid stamp collector and WWII history buff. He was proud to be a Notre Dame alum and was very active in the Notre Dame Club of Utah for many years. Jim had a passion for sports and coached football, baseball and softball when his kids were young. He played hockey, softball and golf for a number of years. He was an avid hockey and baseball fan with season tickets for many years to the Salt Lake Golden Eagles and Utah Grizzlies hockey teams as well as the Salt Lake Buzz, Stingers and Bees baseball teams. He also loved to ski, hike, camp and fish.
Above all else, he loved his family and grandchildren and enjoyed sharing stories with anyone who would listen.
Jim is survived by children Sharon (Chris) and Jim (Cass); grandchildren J.C., Sadie and Joey; sister Carolyn (Marc) Karel of Auburndale, MA; and sister-in-law Christine (Louis) Rieg of Ashville, New York.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jean, granddaughter Elizabeth Rose, brother-in-law Walter Barnes and nephew Damian Rieg.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church, 1975 South 2300 East, Salt Lake City, where friends may call one hour prior. Committal, Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 4th Avenue and T Street. Funeral directors, Neil O'Donnell and Sons.
We would like to thank the amazing staff at Sunrise of Holladay and Jim's nurses and care givers at Inspiration Hospice and One Care Home Health for the tender, loving care they gave our dad over the last two years. You are all angels! In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to Primary Children's Hospital, 100 N. Mario Capecchi Drive, SLC, UT 84113, a place that our dad held close to his heart.
Jim would like you to wear Notre Dame colors to the Mass, if you wish.
