Jean Falsone Obituary

I'm okay…
We all know that we're going to die sometime, and I didn't particularly want to be there when it happened. But I was and the grim reaper swept me away on April 2, 2012 at age 63.
It was quite a day when Amy Frances and Robert O. Kron welcomed two tiny shriveled-up little girls at the Provo General Hospital on July 16, 1948. The second one was me, and I slid in backwards.
I graduated from Skyline High School, 1966, and received my BA in French and English in 1972 from the University of Utah and my Masters of Education in 1987.
Where did those thirty years go - teaching French at Bonneville Junior High School from 1972 - 2001? The icing on the cake was taking a herd of students each year to discover the wonders of Europe. A great way to end my teaching career came when I received the Foreign Language Teacher of the Year award for the State of Utah in 1999.
It was at the Green Street Bar where the lead singer for the Disgusting Brothers, Sam Falsone, caught my eye. He was taller than me, dark and handsome, and he would come to win my heart. I trapped Sam like a dirty rat and we were married in 1986.
Following a raucous romp on the bedroom floor, our beloved Nina joined our family in 1988. She's brought us nothing but joy, and my life has been so enriched by her tenacity and zest for life. She has taught me so much about what it's like to live with my disabilities and I am so very, very proud of her.
Before Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) robbed me of my dignity and independence, I enjoyed cooking and entertaining, running marathons, drawing and painting, tending my gardens, reading and learning new things. And there were always travel adventures to look forward to.
I am survived by my sweet husband Sam and my beautiful daughter, Nina. Other family members include my Dad, Kronie (Barbara); brother Rok Kron (Judy) Greeley, CO; sisters Kate Watson (Michael) Albuquerque, NM; and Liz Quealy (Pat) Salt Lake City, UT. I was preceded in death by my Mom, Frannie, Aunt Jean Phinney, Aunt Katherine Kron and Cousin Donald Kron. I've been blessed with a number of wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews that will miss me, no doubt.
I received special support through the PSP/CBD/MSA Support Group and Wellness Clinic at the U of U. Special thanks for the thoughtful care from Drs. Lauren Schrock and David Sprecher. You're the bomb.
I especially want to thank my many old friends, Geri, Mary, Beth and Cindy, who have made me feel very loved through this journey. And to those who traveled long distances to say their good-byes; it meant a lot to me. Special new friends have come into my life - Martha, Nancy and Suzanne, to help make things easier. Distant thoughts take me to Casey Chaney, my running coach who encouraged me. And then there's my family who hovered constantly, seeing to my every need (and some needs I didn't have).
I love flowers, but our house has looked like a funeral parlor for months. If the spirit moves you, donations to the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City or CUREPSP (www.give.psp.com) would be appreciated.
I have planned a service to be held at the First Unitarian Church, 569 South 1300 East, on April 14, 2012 at 3:00 pm. A Bon Voyage party will follow at our home at 6:00 pm.

This past week, I was in a meeting with Jean's teaching colleague Geri Nicastro. As we went around the table making self-introductions, Geri mentioned that she had been a teacher. That prompted a number of comments from other former teachers. You know, you just can't go anywhere without teachers popping up!

I added that Geri and I had traveled to Europe with a junior high group. Immediately, my thoughts flew to multiple memories of Jean. Not only had she and I shared three different student tours, we had spent years organizing and training our students to compete in various French Language Fairs. She had judged my own son in a French Poetry Recitation without knowing he was my progeny. With her expert ear for a good French accent, she awarded him "le Premier Prix" (1st Place).

I have run into a number of Jean's former students who need no nudging to sing her praises as a teacher and a friend. I am still in touch with Jean's daughter, Nina, sharing a love for elephants. I volunteer alongside her sister, Liz, in the Assistance League of Salt Lake. Whenever I run into her colleagues from Bonneville Junior High, Jean is always part of our reminiscing. Though I haven't seen Sam for a very long time, I still feel a connection with him and hear about him from others.

Bottom line, Jean's inimitable spirit is still strong and quite alive. Love ya, Jeannie!

November 20, 2018

Jean, ma chère, tu me manques encore.

I've been volunteering at the Assistance League and have seen your sister Liz fairly often. Whether we speak of you or not when Liz and I see each other, you're always on my mind for some time thereafter.

Ton esprit sera toujours près de mon coeur.

Ton ami,

I was hoping to find Jean and re-connect, in this age of technology, and sadly, I found her here. One of my favorite teachers of all time, and Junior High was in the early eighties. She had such a zest for life. Sam, it's funny because I probably could have reconnected with her when the Brothers were playing all those times at Green Street in the late eighties. I was the young blond from the lock company, who used to tag along as a "band helper". I'm glad that you had the love and happiness she could give, for the time she was here. I know Jean is greatly missed!

I was lucky enough to be one of Madame Falsone's students about 20 years ago. I was thinking of her and wanted to write her with praise and thanks for her 3 great years. I am so sad to hear that she passed away. She was a great woman and a great teacher. My deepest sympathies.

Sam and Nina, I was shocked and saddened today upon hearing of Jean's passing. I had the privilege of teaching with her at Bonneville for 10 years, and I had the pleasure of attending a faculty gathering at your beautiful home during that time, also.
I remember Jean with nothing but fondness and respect- she was a great teacher and wonderful person.
I am so sorry for your loss and the tough times you all had to endure. I hope that time has been kind in helping you both heal, but also kind in allowing you to remember the good times and your love.

Qui est là
Personne
C'est simplement mon cœur qui bat
Qui bat très fort
A cause de toi...Here I am, 43 years old and I can still recite one of the poems you taught us. You were funny, strong, and cared about us. You are the teacher I tell my own kids about when I want to explain a good teacher to them. You, your coffee, your Joy perfume. I wanted to be JUST like you when I grew up. Thank you for making such an indelible mark in my life and in this world. To your family--may you find peace and the same joie de vivre as Mlle. Kron

I just found out about Jean's passing. As I read many of the comments I am reminded of what a really great teacher Jean really was. I was a teacher at Bonneville for 15 years with Jean. When I started there Jean helped me acclimate to a new school. I knew right away she was one of the best. I remember sitting in the Faculty Room eating lunch with several teachers. For years Jean would eat the school lunch and then one year, she started bringing a lunch from home in her “I Love Lucy” lunch box. Jean left her legacy with her students and everyone she met. My daughter and I were among the lucky ones to travel with her on that last trip to France. It was so memorable. I also enjoyed the obit. It was so like Jean to take care of all the details. To Sam and Nina, while you are missing her, know that we are, too.
Bon Voyage and Happy trails to you till we meet again.

July 3, 2012

Jean, you have been in my thoughts for the past several months and just found out about your passing. I am a former student that had the pleasure of going on two of your wonderful European trips, one of which was was the year you retired.

Now I am a teacher with students of my own that also do their damndest to get me to go off on captivating tales of excitement and adventure; however, none can hold a candle to the saga of that ”unlucky traveling dress” that when warn left a trail of distruction/misfortune. I remember as a class all we had to do was mention you were wearing it and we'd be treated to your captivating retelling of the multitude of events the of which the garment became infamous for the rest of the period. Oh how we were perplexed by your refusal to burn it in some ritualistic fashion. ” It's nice, you can crumple it up into a ball the size of your fist, it won't wrinkle, and if it gets wet it dries in an hour- it's to practical to get rid of; besides, I like it!” Was usually your final decloration.

All in all, you are still one of my favorite mentors who taught me the power of being firm-yet compassionate, demanding excellence despite the lowering standards, and allowing some to fail so they truly appreciate success when they achieve it. You may not be here in person but your legacy has continued to flourish. I wish you a most fond bon voyage to your next great adventure.

Sam-
I just heard that Jean died. I'm really really sorry, but I understand that her life had become so hard. I read the other messages and they are mostly to Mde Falsone from her students. I remember her from another era, junior high and high school-beautiful, smart, quick, and talented. A wonderful voice and a sweet and joyous person. And I loved (if you can say that) her obit. Totally Jean...
I bet she's somewhere on a beach now...Peace

Dear Sam, Nina and Family,

What a wonderful and life affirming service Jean planned for herself, and you fulfilled so graciously for her. Just like Jean it was full of humor and humanity - a perfect tribute to the beautiful woman we love and remember. Our thoughts and prayers are with you...and with Jean.

Mlle Kron was a light at Bonneville. She was firm but funny, exacting but warm, one of the best teachers I've ever had. "To say the u sound in French," she said, "make your mouth round like a little cheerio and say 'E'." "If your mouth doesn't feel tired after speaking French for an hour then you're not doing it right." She had a couple of rotating racks of books at the corner of her room, near where I sat, and she let me borrow them. She made up songs about students. She kept us laughing and learning. We loved her and felt she cared about us.

Sam,

I won't try to imagine what you're feeling at this difficult time of loss. As I listened to the comments from Kathy and Liz yesterday so full of sophisticated wit and genuine fun I was reminded why I have so enjoyed any time spent with the Kron family. I know you can enjoy peace and love forever by remembering your private times of laughter and conversation with Jean.

Madame Falsone obviously left a lasting impression on her students in a way few teachers can. She inspired us, pushed us, demanded our best, and often got it, which is no small feat in junior high. I met my wife, Kristina, in Mme Falsone's class in 9th grade. We used to pass off oral projects in the back of the room behind where Kristina sat, and I didn't realize, at the time, that in trying so hard to impress Mme and earn a "parfait" score, I was actually impressing my eavesdropping future spouse. The last time I saw Mme Falsone was at our wedding in 1997 -- we so appreciated her thoughtfulness in attending. I hope my children are lucky enough to have one teacher as amazing as Mme Falsone.

I was one of those lucky kids to get to have the pleasure of going to Europe with Madame Falsone! In fact, I believe I was with one of her last groups to go. She knew how to show us Europe in style! She was an amazing teacher and person and will be missed by everyone. Thank you for your wonderful life, Mme Falsone!

Dear Sam and Nina,
The world is a little dimmer today without Jean to brighten it. There's no doubt she was a truly remarkable lady. With my deepest sympathy and hope that the sadness you feel today will soon be replaced by memories of happier times.

April 12, 2012

Mme, You are still one of my All-time favorite teachers! I learned so much in your class, and I loved that we were friends outside of the classroom. Thank you so much for coming to my wedding, as well. I will always cherish and miss you.

My sister Sarah and I both had three years of French from Mme Falsone. I got to be one of the kids she took to Europe one summer. I will never forget running through the Louvre with her to see the Winged Victory and the Mona Lisa that she'd taught us all about in class. I babysat for Nina a few times when I was in ninth grade and Nina was still just a baby. The last time I babysat a couple of boys from my grade (one of whom is now my husband) stopped by, uninvited by me, to say hello. They were still at the house when Sam and Mme Falsone arrived home. I was mortified, and Mme was not pleased. That was the end of babysitting Nina. I still love French. I still remember a few of the poems, or at least chunks of them that we had to memorize for Mme's class. I feel like writing down a million memories of Mme Falsone and her French class, but I won't be so indulgent.
I feel so blessed to have had Mme for a teacher. I will never forget her.

You once asked me why I was not born 14 years earlier. I often wished I had been. You taught me to Polka in Leysin, Suisse. Made me appreciate Le Louvre. Looked the other way when I tried my first and last sip of Sangria in Madrid.I formed work habits in your classes that served me well for 36 years. When I returned to France your hand guided me. Can't wait to see you again...This picture is of your 28th Birthday in Caen, France with your everpresent smile. Adieu

April 10, 2012

Jean,
Many students passed through your classroom in 30 years. As you can see from these comments, the impact you had on them is immeasurable.

It's a good thing they didn't know what was going on behind the scenes! We had 14 years together at Bonneville before you showed up in my office in May, 2001, with a big box and said, "You are now the Avon Lady, I'm outta here!" How we got away with all the things we did around that school (and kept our jobs) is still a mystery! We were great partners in crime...Geri is probably still rolling her eyes and shaking her head...and hopefully Mary has forgiven us for the gradebook incident...

Sam and Nina, my thoughts and prayers are with you, and I know if we asked Jean how she's doing today, she would say..."practically perfect!"

Jean,
When you asked Jean how she was doing, her response was always the same, "Practically Perfect" We started many days in the faculty room with coffee and Cheetos, or chips of some kind. We knew how to get the day going. You were a bright light every where you went. A master teacher, great friend, amazing mother and wife. Thanks for all the laughs. I miss you terribly.

Madame Falsone. What an amazing woman. I had the honor of being a student of hers for three years. My memories of her classes have crossed my mind many times as an adult. I am proud to say that I can still remember The Pledge of Allegiance in French and I often think about a poem about snails that were very disappointed, but that is the only line I can remember! Madame Falsone taught me much more than a language though. She has truly left a footprint on my own life. I remember how much enthusiasm she had for just about everything and how very classy she was. She is definitely a favorite of mine. I remember running into her when I was in college and she still remembered me. She had a way of making everyone feel so special. I am so grateful for the memories I have of her. Thank you to her family for sharing her with her students!

Madame Falsone you were a great teacher. I carried on learning French after Bonneville for 2 more years and all of the language learning influenced my ability to learn Portuguese quickly and be able to retain it these last 10 years. I still have French flashbacks all the time. I can still count in French, say a few things and will always remember Tele Frances... je suis ananas. Thank you for all the good times.

Jean's wit brightened my day at Bonneville. I was fortunate to hear it everyday in the morning at 7.00 A.M. Thank you for being a great friend.

April 9, 2012

Nina,

I'm so sorry you had to lose your mom far too early in life. I've never met you but I've known your name since I was 13. Your mom would often mention you in class and it was clear you were a joy in her life. I have thought about your mom over the years because she is one of the best teachers I ever had and her influence still impacts me today. She showed through her example how to be a strong, confident woman who had high expectations and wouldn't settle for less. There was so much organization and order to her classroom---it was like an oasis. I remember she had beautiful handwriting and always dressed nice. Your mom was a classy lady.

I hope all the wonderful memories you and your dad have will slowly fill the huge void in your life right now. I'm so sorry for you both.

With sympathy,

Mademoiselle Kron as I originally knew you- Sam and Jean later on in life,
I was truly blessed to have one of the greatest teachers of all time as a Bonneville Jr. High student, and to have such fun, life-loving friends in wine classes and tastings later on. Jean's smile could light up a room, and she always had that twinkle in her eye that danced at every word when someone was speaking to her. I am so saddened that this spark of life has been extinguished, but I know that when I look up to the skies at night, those little jewels in heaven shining down on me are Jean's eyes reminding me to drink more French and Italian wine and live life to the fullest every minute of every day. Love and peace to Sam and Nina!

Jean had a flare for life that few people have. She excelled in reaching her students with her gift of teaching not only French but some of life's most important lessons. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. Mademoiselle Kron (as I knew her in Jr. High) truly had a joie de vivre. She inspired my lifelong passion for everything French. What s trip and journey it has been to know the Kron family for nearly fifty years! Jean was such a joy and inspiration. Her amazing strength and fortitude in the last few months has helped light up the darkness and helped show her family and friends the way. Kudoes to Jeannie, she did it her way! I believe that tears can heal, that memories comfort and love goes on forever. Nothing ever loved is lost, especially the magnificent and wonderfull bond between twins. My "little buddy" and Jeannie we're truly blessed! You will once again see the beauty of each coming day. When the sun sets in the evening and the day once again disappears, you all will see a new star in the heavens shine bright. Love your guts with all my heartt and soul!!! Jerri

Bonjour Madame! -as she made her grand entrance. That's how each day started in French class. And she was fascinating ....sophisticated, charismatic, (a little bit scary.) Definitely a force to be reckoned with as she stood at the front of the classroom. My favorite part of class was at the back table, one on one reciting the assigned poetry where she quietly listened and smiled with genuine love in her eyes. I know she truly loved her students and was passionate about her work. A master teacher and a superb human being. Bon Voyage Madame!

Although I was a student of Madame Falsone's many moons ago, she will always be one of the most influential teachers of my educational career. I don't think I was remotely aware of how much I had learned from her until I spent time in France as an adult, and was able to converse with those who were around me with relative ease. She always told us that after leaving her, we would not just be capable of reciting a few silly poems and stories, nor would we only remember how to say the American National Anthem in French (which, I must admit, I always thought was a little weird :) but we would be able to actually speak French. In my case, she was right. And for that, I will be forever grateful. Au Revoir, Madame Falsone. We will miss you..

Wonderful Madame Falsone, how you enriched the lives of so very many students who loved you and were scolded with your smile and your statement in a fantastic German accent, "There is too much happiness in here." You mean more to me than you know and I love you. A toute à l'heure! Mimi

Madame Falsone was my favorite teacher at Bonneville Jr. High. I loved going to French class. I remember when Mme. Falsone gave us our french names, I was so excited to hear her pronounce my name. Her accent was beautiful! My daughter will begin taking french in the fall, I hope she has a teacher as classy as Mme. Falsone! (I can still recite the pledge of alligance in french...I wish I remembered more.)
May your family find comfort in precious memories.

I will always remember Madame Falsone. I can admit that I was a terrible student, but she always showed an amazing form of encouraging strictness that was a very effective form of motivation. I didn't realize how much I had learned from her until I served a french speaking mission. The lessons from Jr. High were alive and well as I gained a greater mastery of the language. I always hoped that I would run into her and have a conversation in French, but that will have to wait a few more years.

Au reviour Madame Falsone, tu me manquera. A Dieu.

Jean showed me at a very young age that life was for living. She mirrored back to me a part of myself that no one had ever mirrored before. She was confident, funny, sophisticated and full of grace. She taught how to travel. I feel very blessed to have had her in my life. May your final journey be a beautiful one Jean.

I may have been one of thousands of students for you, but there has only been one Madame Falsone in my life. I'm honored to have been your student, your aide, and to have traveled with you. You taught me so much, and French was just the beginning. You will be missed. Aurevoir.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Falsone family for your dear love one who has fallen asleep in death. May the God of all comfort be with you and give you strength beyond normal to get through this most difficult time.

I still remember the first day of class... you couldn't get a french name with Kyndra so you called me Carole.

Madame Falsone,
Merci pour tout ce que vous avez fait. C'était une telle joie que vous ayez en tant que professeur.
Vous allez nous manquer.
Au revoir et merci!

I adored Madame Falsone!!!! My fondest memory is how she would begin each class.. Make your mouth like an O and say E..... The perfect way to teach perfect pronounciation! I came to visit her in the hospital when Nina was born. She was so gracious and happy to see me! And then I saw her about thirteen years ago. She was in the car with her daughter while her husband was in the store. She was parked right next to me. I said,"are you Madame Falsone???". Her face lit up and she said YES!!! She was a wonderful teacher and a fabulous lady!!!!! I am so glad to have known her .........

The first person I thought of when I was finally able to visit Paris was Mme Falsone who was one of the greatest teachers I ever had. She built a francophile base that has lasted my whole life. I'm so sorry for your loss.

The world became a better place on the day Jean was born. I consider it an honor and a privilege to have known her. She had a uncanny wit that at times left me pondering her words for days or even years to come. I treasure the opportunity that we had to raise our daughters together. and laugh at their creative antics. My heart goes out to you, Sam and Nina, as you have lost an amazing wife and mother.

Mme Falsone remains to date my most influential teacher... and I was her student 25 years ago! She was exacting-- demanding nothing less than perfection, but without making us feel badly if we didn't achieve it. Rather, she inspired us to work harder. I owe my excellent French accent exclusively to her. More than that, though, she showed me what it meant to be a fearless traveler as she took me under her wing on one of her trips to France when I was just 11 years old. My mother said that I was never the same after that trip. She inspired a love of life and adventure that I have never forgotten and never let lag. I remember the posters in her classroom-- "Sometimes I just sits and thinks and sometimes I just sits" was my favorite. And she also had that one of Pierce Brosnan hiding on the inside door of her supply closet. I think she took that down when she got married. But maybe not. Growing up in a predominantly Mormon culture, too, where many women were stay-at-home mothers, I longed for and found in Mme Falsone a strong and independent woman outside the home whom I could admire and aspire to be. That was much needed by this timid adolescent. I am heartbroken at the world's loss with her passing, but so grateful to have had her grace my life. Wishing her family much love.

Madame Falsone, I was a student of yours in the late 80s. I remember thinking you were such a beautiful woman and spoke French so elegantly. I loved hearing stories of you and Sam, and baby Neen. I will always remember you fondly as one of my favorite teachers. My condolences go to Sam and Nina, and to your family and friends. Sincerely,

"To the Falsone's from the Pardini's"

Sam and Nina, we send our love and thoughts out to you. You are a big part of our family and we love you very much. Jean was an extraordinary woman and example of grace under a cruel and debilitating disease. She remained so positive throughout her ordeal. She was truly brave. Prayers to both of you now.

Jeannie, I've been missing you for years since you and I retired and we no longer made our European treks. We had no more District French Fairs to obsess about, and most unfortunately I let my retired/rehired career keep me too busy to look up an old and very dear friend until it was almost too late.

I may not have called on you and Sam and Nina very often, but you were very frequently in my thoughts. You will continue to be in my heart now that that I've squandered my chances to share facetime with you and your family.

Sam and Nina, you have always been very special people with unique ways of making the world a nicer, friendlier place. Losing a wife and a mother, especially one like Jean, is going to be rougher than I can imagine. Nonetheless, I know that your friends and family will spread their arms around the both of you.

My deepest sympathies to you two. I'll see you next Saturday to celebrate Jean's amazing life.

Our family talks about "Madam Falsone" very often and our daughters loved her so very much. She was what a teacher should be as well as being an incredible woman, wife and mother. What a positive and caring person and what a privilege it is to have known her. Our love to Sam and Nina.

Mademoiselle Kron was an extraordinary teacher! Thirty years later, I remember her classes (and even most of the French I learned) very clearly. I loved her lesson about "tu" versus "vous" being based on how much a prospective beau might like you. I loved her love of Miss Manners. I remember her many wise life lessons peppered in between conjugation charts and vocabulary lists. I was grateful to muddle my way through a trip to Paris alone in my 20s thanks to sitting in her classroom for just two years. She was a gift to so many and will be fondly remembered by thousands of adoring students! Au revior et merci!!

What a wonderful tribute to your own, well-lived life! My thoughts are with Nina and family; I don't know you but I know what it is like to lose a parent too soon. It's been over 20 years since I last saw Jean, but I remember her well. She and my dad, Randy Montgomery, were running buddies and friends. God speed and may her memory be eternal.

Madame Falsone you were such an amazing teacher that made class so fun! I remember when you were expecting Nina and how excited you were. I'm sure, if she is like her mother, she grew up to be a beautiful girl.
My thoughts are with your family and friends that are missing you. Watch over them.
